Give Us a Mystery! - Herr's Mystery Mix - 9/7/2021 UPDATE

Herr's Mystery Flavor - 7-Eleven

Three classic flavors in one chip, eh? The contest ended on August 31st, 2021, let's see what my guesses were and if I was right!

So the chip itself is a reddish orange, ridged, with little flecks of green. When I think of Herr's classic flavors, I think BBQ (gold bag), Sour Cream and Onion (green bag), and original (blue bag), but that seems way too easy. How could they have a giveaway contest if that were the case?

The website lists the following as flavor options that could be part of the trio of this mix: sour cream and onion, BBQ, salt & vinegar, cheddar and sour cream, honey BBQ, red hot, fire, ketchup, old bay, dill pickle, cracked pepper and sea salt, jalapeno, boardwalk salt and vinegar, mesquite BBQ, and Cheddar Horseradish.

Time to binge on some chips and make some guesses.

Beans & Soda, a Match Made in Heaven? Or Gastronomic Nightmare?

Serious Bean Co. Dr. Pepper Baked Beans - Walmart
Dr. Pepper & Baked Beans Sitting in A Tree, F-A-R-T-I-N-G.
Despite the fact that they are popular enough to warrant several shelves in the grocery store, I feel like people shy away from professing their affinity for baked beans. I guess it's because we all associate them with, you know,... the "aftermath." But they're my favorite grilled-food side dish and to see them paired up with one of my favorite sodas is pretty cool.
When I first saw this post by The Impulsive Buy, I got really excited. My favorite soda AND BBQ? Wait a minute, this combination isn't new at all!

Buck Wild Honey BBQ Snack Mix - Gift but Available at Starbucks

Buck Wild Honey BBQ Snack Mix - Gift but Available at Starbucks
I was sent the snacks for free but not paid for this review.
A few months ago, the people behind Buck Wild sent me some gluten free products to review. Maybe it was because of my gluten free Aldi reviews? Whatever the reason, I'm all about free food.
They sent over a healthy selection, but one of the products that caught my eye was this Honey BBQ snack mix. I looked like it had corn nuts in it, and I've been craving corn chips, so I threw it into my photo setup for some quick snap shots so I could dig in.

Wild Ophelia Chocolate Bars (TBT Holiday 2016) - Target

Wild Ophelia Chocolate Bars (Holiday 2016) - Target
Oh, Ophelia, you've been on my mind girl since the holidays.

Christmas goodies went on clearance back in January and I took advantage of some awesome sales to stock up on these Wild Ophelia chocolate bars. I'm no stranger to this brand, back in 2013 I reviewed two flavors, and I really enjoyed them but, due to food blogging, I rarely find the time to repurchase products for my own consumption. Even if I really like them. Since 2013 this company has made quite a few changes, so I'm happy for this excuse to revisit them and see what they've been up to. (Plus they were on clearance, which is always awesome.)

Ruffles All Dressed - Wegman's

Ruffles All Dressed - Wegman's
All dressed? What does that even mean? Whatever it is, it's being advertised as the #1 flavor of crisp in Canada.
According to the internet (know-er of all things foody), All Dressed is a melange of ingredients that include tomato, salt, vinegar, onion, sour cream, barbecue, a sprinkle of this and a sprinkle of that. It's the “everything bagel” of Canada.
Sounds pretty good to me! Okay Canada, I'm sold. Let's give this a try!

Thai Chili Kettle Chips- Aldi

Thai Chili Kettle Chips- Aldi
Aldi is getting so fancy! Just look at all the new chip flavors they've been coming out with: sriracha, beer, margarita, dill pickle, and now a Thai chili version? I love it!

When I saw these in the weekly circular I thought they were going to be really popular and I was worried they might sell out before I got my hands on them. It turns out that I misjudged the typical Aldi consumer, because these don't seem to be selling at all! The display still full during my last visit, and it seems like the rest of these bags are doomed to the clearance rack. Even though I misjudged their popularity, I still had high hopes that these chips were going to taste awesome.

Rock & Roll Wiener - Grab A Wiener: Wildwood, NJ

Rock & Roll Wiener - Grab A Wiener: Wildwood, NJ
Wiener Wednesday? I feel like that should be a thing, but I don't review enough hot dogs to make it work. Then again, this place has some really interesting ones.

I saw this place last year and I instantly fell in love with how awful the name is. I mean, Grab A Wiener? Amazing! Plus, they totally did it on purpose and they run with it. They sell themed shirts and merchandise with innocent, yet dirty, slogans revolving wieners. Last year I stumbled upon it after I already ate. This year? The second I hit the boardwalk I went straight to this place to give one of their wieners a try. (Ha, wiener.)

Beer Brat BBQ Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJAs s

As seen on my Instagram Account
Beer Brat BBQ Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ
In 2014, several Aldi-exclusive brands released pizzas with some interesting flavors, like Chicken Club, Gyro, Tandoori, and Cuban. I had a lot of fun buying and trying them all, and while none of them were inedible, I can't say they were all enjoyable either. The Chicken club was one of the richest, cheesiest, and crispiest freezer pizzas I have ever had, the others? Well, they were fun concepts, but none worked nearly as well as the Chicken Club.

Even though I wasn't wowed by the last few Aldi pizzas I've reviewed, I still wanted to give this Beer Brat version a try. It's so different from the others, and it's  only specialty take-and-bake pizza they currently offer. (Although more might be on the way soon.) Let's see if this pizza was worth the purchase.

The box for this pizza was WAY too big for my photo set up, which is meant for tiny foods, so this photo was taken with my cellphone in the Aldi freezer case.

Unlike the other Aldi pizzas I've reviewed, this one is from their Take & Bake line, so it's kept in the refrigerated section instead of the freezer, and it's packaged similarly to a take-out pizza. The rest of the pizzas in this line are 16", while this one is only 14, so it's a bit smaller than usual, and it's a bit more expensive. Even with the price tag padded a little bit, it was still cheaper than a delivery pizza of the same size with the same amount of toppings. As far as the design goes, I like the simple brown cardboard and black text, and it does a good job of looking nice while staying relatively cheap. It isn't as gorgeous as other full color pizza boxes, but it gets the job done just fine.

I removed the shrink plastic from the refrigerated pizza, preheated the oven, and baked it until the crust started the brown and the cheese bubbled. (Just like you would with any other frozen/refrigerated pizza.) When it was done, it smelled sweet, like BBQ sauce and caramelized onions. The aroma was much sweeter than I originally thought it'd be, and I couldn't detect anything beer-y about it.

I sliced it up, and took a bite. I gotta say, I can't taste any beer in this at all. Part of me is relieved, I hate beer, but that does seem like false advertizing. The box said that this was covered with a "Beer BBQ sauce," but it tastes like Kraft Honey BBQ to me. It's really sweet, a little onion-y, and tomato-y. It's not bad at all, it's just really sweet. As for the rest of the pizza, the caramelized peppers and onions added a different texture, but they were really sweet as well, and the cheese blend was pretty mild. The strongest flavoring, other than the sauce, were the thick slices of bratwurst which added a slightly spicy and meaty flavor.

It's been a long time since I've eaten Bratwurst, I think I had some during a Christmas party in 2013, so I don't really have a vivid brat-based memory to compare this to, but to me, these slices taste like a better version of the sausage crumbles that delivery pizza usually comes with. These slices were moist, meaty, and they helped to offset the sweetness just a bit. (Moist and meaty... that was awful to type.)

I don't think I would buy this pizza again, it was just too sweet for me, it needs something strong to cut through all that sweetness, maybe some spicy peppers? Then again, that's my personal preference. If you enjoy the sweet BBQ sauce based pizzas from Papa John's, you'll love this one. This was better than the last three Papa John's pizzas I've tried, but it was just too sweet for me to want to repurchase.

Papa Johns better step-up their game, you're getting beaten by a no-frills grocery store brand.

Elmer's Bar-B-Que CheeWees - (Gift) New Orleans, LA

Elmer's Bar-B-Que CheeWees - (Gift) New Orleans, LA
A few months ago my boyfriend went down to Louisiana, and when he returned, he had a bag full of goodies for me to review. I already made a post about the Beignet mix, but the rest of his foodie gifts got lost in my monstrous food stash. Now that I'm preparing for the pumpkin-pocalypse of 2014, I'm working my way through the foodie back-up, and now we'll finally get to see what these little cheese puffs taste like!

BBQ Recipe Chicken Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ

BBQ Recipe Chicken Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ
Since I was so impressed by the Chicken Club pizza I bought at Aldi, I decided to try another of their "fancy" pizzas. This time it's BBQ chicken themed.

Sliders - Pinterest Recipe Review

Sliders - Pinterest Recipe Review  - The Pin : The Recipe
Happy Memorial Day!
This year my family had a lot going on, so we weren’t able to get together for a Memorial Day celebration. Instead, I made a little spread for my immediate family to enjoy.
I made:
  • Grilled Hotdogs
  • Grilled Corn on the Cob
  • Grilled Zucchini Coins
  • A Mini Veggie Pizza
  • Strawberry-Lime Smoothies
  • And these Sliders
I originally pinned this slider recipe because these are supposed to be almost identical to White Castle burgers, and I have to say, these are pretty darn close. (I have actually used this slider recipe twice before.)

If you want your burgers to taste just like White Castle’s I suggest using a potato roll for the bun, Velveeta singles for the cheese, and only using diced white onions, a pickle, and ketchup for the garnish. (Like the burger to the right.)

The burger to the left uses a whole grain slider bun from Wegman’s. This was my first time tying these buns and I am not too happy with their overall flavor or texture. They are a little dry and have a strong wheat flavor to them that overpowers the burger. I think I’ll stick to potato rolls in the future, but this recipe is definitely a winner.

BBQ Pulled Pork - Pinterest Recipe Review

BBQ Pulled Pork - Pinterest Recipe : The PIN
Time for another Pinterest recipe!
I had a bunch of friends over tonight so I made some pinterest recipes. One of them was this BBQ pulled pork.
The recipe was super easy, but the finished product was VERY VERY sweet. The whole thing really depends on what BBQ sauce you use. Even though I used a tangy sauce, it got a lot sweeter as it cooked down. So I had to modify the recipe a bit to cut the sweetness.
