Quickie Chips Reviews: Southwestern Queso & Beer n' Brats

Southwestern Queso

Smell: They smell like normal Cheddar & Sour Cream potato chips with a touch of taco seasoning.

Taste: Tostito's salsa con queso is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, so I was hoping this would be similar, but in chip-form, and sadly, it's not. In all fairness, this claims to be "queso," not "salso con queso," so maybe I was just setting my expectations a little too high, but I'm really glad I got this little bag because I'd never finish a giant one. These taste like cheddar-chips with some paprika and onion powder. Cheddar is the boldest flavor here, and even with the hints of veggie powders (bell peppers, onion and tomato), I find them to be pretty one-note and not all that enjoyable. But, I don't like cheddar and sour cream chips either. I prefer my cheesy snacks in cracker, curl, or crunchy Cheeto-form.

Beer 'n Brats

Smell: These kind of remind me of the Hot Dog Pringles I reviewed a while back. (Which were surprisingly good!) Already these are way better than the other beer-based chips I've reviewed. (Which smelled like stale beer left out at a party.) If I had to guess the flavoring based on the scent alone, I never in a million years would have guessed these were beer-related. Mostly these smell like hot dogs and a little sauerkraut.

Taste: The bratwurst flavoring is what I noticed first, although it tastes more like bologna lunch meat than a cooked brat, but then the more complex aftertaste kicks in. If you get a chip with a lot of powdered seasoning on it, the aftertaste is more like the stale beer flavoring I've experienced before, which I am not a fan of, but the lighter seasoned chips have more of a sauerkraut-like finish which I like a LOT more. As most of you know, I still don't like beer. (I always try them since b/f likes it a lot, but none of them ever appeal to me beyond a few sips.) So this flavor is another "meh," for me personally, but if you really like hot dogs, bologna, beer, and chips...this could be your new favorite snack!

Both flavors are busts for me and my taste-buds. With that being the case, I'm really glad I was able to find them in these mini-bags at Walmart, because I'd be really bummed out if I wasted my money on the larger bags. Everyone likes different things, so if you're a fan of sour cream and cheddar chips, I bet the queso would be a great change of pace while keeping the cheese-y flavoring you love in the forefront. Beer and hotdog (or bologna) fans, you might think the Beer n' Brats hit it out of the park.

For a cheddar and sour cream chip hater like me, who isn't too keen on beer, I can finish both of these little bags, but I can't see myself ever repurchasing either flavor. Especially not in their full-sized form.

Beer Recommendations? (& What I Ate Last Night)

I cooked up some more salmon burgers, with sriracha mayo and toasted brioche buns, for dinner and I tried another flavor of beer. I got the burger patties at BJ's Wholesale Club (because I had a coupon) and I like them a lot more than I thought I would! They're pretty substantial and they work nicely with the sriracha mayo I have in the fridge. Right now I'm just cooking them up on a griddle inside, since it's so buggy outside, but I'd like to try grilling some up with a sweet chili sauce glaze before the summer is over.

To go along with last night's dinner I tried another beer.
Since I'm a self-proclaimed beer-hater, I'm trying to be more open minded this year and try new flavors to see if there's one out there I like.  I went to Wine Works and built my own 6-pack with a few flavors off the shelves (I picked them solely based on cool-labels), but no luck yet. Beer has a flavor profile that just doesn't appeal to me. I very rarely drink alcohol, and when I do, it's sugary mixed drinks that barely taste like booze at all. I've been trying to keep an open mind and try more beers, since all my friends really seem to enjoy them, but I haven't had any luck finding ones I like.

Do you have any beer recommendations for me?
Leave them in the comments below. If I can find it, I'll give it a try and let you know what I think.

Insta-Review: Ben & Jerry's New Belgium Salted Caramel Brown-ie Ale

I keep meaning to write up a formal review for this ice cream but I don't think that's ever going to happen, so this will have to do.

Maybe my "adult taste-buds" still haven't come in yet or something, because I'm nearly 30 years old and I still hate beer. I try all the new beers my friends bring over, everything from peanut butter to creme brûlée brew, and nothing has won me over yet. I take a sip, then I react like those babies on YouTube trying a lemon for the first time. Once at a BBQ I even spat it out right into the grass! Not my classiest moment, but I still gave that beer a try.

I think it's safe to say I'm a beer-hater, but when I saw all the rave reviews this boozy flavor of Ben & Jerry's was getting, I decided to give it the benefit of a doubt. (Plus my boyfriend likes beer, and brownies, so I figured it wouldn't go to waste if I ended up hating it.)

The beer-part of this ice cream IS the actual ice cream. This off-white creamy base is flavored like Belgium brown ale, and then there are caramel swirls and bits of brownie blended in. I'm totally on board with the caramel and brownie, but that ale-base had me pretty nervous. It makes up the majority of this little container, and if I hate beer then that could be a problem for me and my baby-taste-buds.

I took a bite, and surprisingly, it's pretty good! The ice cream has this salty, yeasty flavoring to it, mixed with vanilla, and I know it's meant to mimic a brown ale, but in my mind it kind of tastes like a soft South Philly pretzel! When you mix that slightly salty and savory base with sweet caramel and little chunks of brownie the end result is pretty darn good! As a non-beer lover, I think of this is a salted chocolate pretzel ice cream, and I really dig it! If any of you are the kind of person who dips their french fries in a Wendy's Frosty, this is the ice cream for you. It's salty, kind of savory, but sweet all at the same time.

I baked up some brownies and served a big scoop of this stuff to my boyfriend and he really enjoyed it. (But he's a sucker for a warm chewy brownie.)

I bought this thinking that it was going to be a foodie gift for him, but it ended up being something I really enjoyed too! (I might even like it more than him!) I'm glad I got it, and I might even buy it again. Does Ben & Jerry's make beer? If so, I might have to give that a try.

Southern Tier Crème Brulé Stout - ???

Southern Tier Crème Brulé Stout - ???
Sorry for the last two updates I missed. I threw a party and that kept me pretty busy. Setting up, cooking, cleaning up….you know how it goes.

This was something my awesome friend Jamie brought to my cookie swap Saturday night. THANK YOU JAMIE!

I had seen this around the internet, but my local liquor shop ALWAYS sold out. The shelf is always clear every time I visited the store! I am not a big beer drinker, but I had to see what all the fuss was about.
