Duff Energy Drink - Five Below: Philadelphia, PA

Duff Energy Drink - Five Below: Philadelphia, PA
Normally I avoid energy drinks, but I'm a sucker for nostalgic novelty products, and surprisingly, the last three video game and Nintendo themed novelty energy drinks I reviewed from Five Below were quite tasty! Why not give Duff a try? (It's Duffman approved! Oh yeah!)

The packaging is obviously an homage to the fake beer brand "Duff" from the popular animated series, The Simpsons. Now I've watched the show all my life, and I am a HUGE fan of the Treehouse of Horrors episodes (much more-so the earlier ones, but let's not get into that..), and I'm pretty sure that this can isn't what Duff looked like way back when I was watching Simpsons every night at the dinner table. I remember the cans being solid red, with a white square, and the black "Duff" text. I don't watch all of the new episodes, but I'm pretty sure this is more accurate for the cans that are shown on the newer seasons. (Although, I think Duff and the whole Homer drinking and burping thing has been shown a lot less in recent seasons.) This can is a fun collectable for Simpsons fans, and it makes a great prop for any Simpsons related costumes. (Like Duffman, Homer, or Barney.)

Like the other novelty energy drink I've reviewed, the can really doesn't tell you anything about the flavoring of the beverage inside. Sure, you know how many calories, and the nutritional information, but what is this supposed to taste like? It can't be beer. All of the Nintendo drinks were red-berry flavors, is this another berry flavored beverage?

I opened up the can and poured it into a glass to get a better look, and it was orange! Orange makes sense, it looks more beer-like than any other fruity flavor I can think of, and it smells sweet and orange-y. The aroma isn't very special, it's very reminiscent of all other orange sodas out there, but the best thing about it is that is doesn't have that very strong "energy drink smell."

Since energy drinks seem to effect me really strongly, I only drank one glass to start. This carbonated energy drink tastes just as you would expect it would. It's similar to orange soda, but with that tangy, artificial, and slightly bitter aftertaste. It's not bad actually! I can't really handle the taste of most energy drinks, I usually drink water all day long, but this I could easily drink and tolerate. As for it's energy claim, I might be a special case, since I very very rarely drink these things, but I found that it gave me a pretty strong boost of energy and alertness, and that was from half a can's worth.

Overall, this isn't bad! I don't think energy drinks are good for you, and I very very rarely encourage anyone to drink them, but these novelty drinks from Five Below have all been pretty delicious, and they gave me a decent amount of energy after consumption. If you're a hardcore energy drinker, these might do next-to-nothing for you, so I would say these are more of a novelty product than anything else. If you need a prop for your next Simpsons Halloween costume, or a gift for a Simpsons fan, this is a great little item.

EDIT: I drank this a little while ago and although I still have a pretty strong boost of energy, I also have a mildly painful headache. If you're sensitive to energy drinks, like me, I wouldn't drink a lot of this. I suggest nursing it over a day or two, or just keeping it as a collectable novelty.

  1. There's an E-Can energy drink on J-list if you're into Mega Man. It looks more like the real deal than the ones sold in the US. :3

    1. I've seen those! I am a Megaman fan, I used to play 2 and 4 of the NES as a kid, and I thought about picking it up to review, but a lot of foodies have already done it. Maybe I'll grab a can the next time I order from J-list. (Which is rare, my last order from there was for the Sailor Moon chocolates.)

  2. I like these reviews about this energy drink. But dear I am looking for some Green energy drinks that are made up of natural ingredients. In my opinion they are much more effective.

    1. I don't drink energy drinks in my normal life, I got this because of the fun novelty factor. I tend to stay away from coffee and things that boost energy and drink water all day instead. These kind of things are just fun to review on the blog.
