Mike & Ike Jurassic World - Five Below - Marlton, NJ

Mike & Ike Jurassic World - Five Below - Marlton, NJ
Aw man, I had something for this. (Archer reference anyone?) Seriously, I wish I had some wonderfully pun-y dinosaur related comment to open this review with, or a really good line from one of the movies like, "Dinosaurs eat man. Woman eats dinosaur themed candies at 3AM and reflects on her life choices." Sadly, that's the best I got, I guess I'm not a clever girl. (See what I did there?)

Okay, enough goofing around. On to the review!

The packaging is just a movie-theater sized candy box with some printing, but I freaking love it! I can't say I'm Dinosaur obsessed, like a few of my friends who know all the facts and cool stuff about them, but I do think they're very interesting. (Plus, I loved Jim Henson's Dinosaur series, which really has nothing to do with that, but I just wanted to remind you all that it was an awesome show.) I may not be dinosaur-crazy, but this packaging is just...gorgeous! Look at this thing! The printing is crisp and colorful, the layout is dynamic, and it has faux textured overlays. I feel like the design for this candy box is better than the promo art for the last two Jurassic Park movies! Sure, it's a commercial item and a novelty product with a movie tie-in, so it isn't as if this is a classical piece of art or anything, but when you look at other movie themed novelty candies, this is fantastic! It was fun to photograph, and it's eye catching on store shelves. I think it's safe to say, I like the packaging.

(For the record I'm not a huge fan of the Jurassic Park series, the first one was really great, but it's been downhill ever since. Maybe Chris Pratt will save the franchise because everything he touches turns to gold, but my expectations are really low.)

Inside the box we have 5 different flavors of Mike & Ike and 1 jellybean-like mystery Dinosaur egg. A lot of these flavors have been in other mixes, so they're really nothing new, but I love this color combination! Check out these photos, the candies look gorgeous together.

Kiwi-Banana (Green) - Tangy and a little tart, kind of like eating an unripe banana, but with a generic sweet jellybean-like finish. Not my favorite, but it's enjoyable.

Caribbean Punch (Blue) - It tastes like a mixture of coconut, pineapple, and blue freezer popsicles. It sounds like an odd combination, but it really works well together. This was my favorite, and I wish I had more in my box!

Strawberry-Banana (Red) - It has a sweeter banana flavoring than the kiwi version. It tastes like you took a pink Starburst jellybean and ate it with a banana Mike & Ike from the Minions mix. It's not bad, I like it more than kiwi, but this is one of those candies that tastes like a bath and body product. These ended up being my least favorite, but it really wasn't all that bad. I've had worse.

Paradise Punch (Pink) - I am not sure what this one is supposed to be, it kind of tastes like some kind of bubblegum flavored lemonade, but I'm not sure what's in this one. It's enjoyable in that random fruit flavoring kind of way, but I liked Caribbean Punch a lot more.

Mango (orange) - Sweet, fruity, and very similar to the mango flavored water ice sold at Rita's. Even though I don't like mango as a fruit, I did like this flavor a lot more than others in the mix.

Now the one you've all been waiting for...

Mystery Egg (Gray with speckles) - These little eggs are gorgeous. I love the varying tones of gray (I went out of my way to avoid making any reference to you know what.). There's a depth to the specks, as if they'd been applied in a lot of layers, and it adds a lot of visual interest to the product.

As gorgeous as they are, I took a bite and...I didn't like it. At first I couldn't really tell what this was, maybe grape? I ate a few more eggs and I realized that this tasted familiar, but what was it? THE FREAKING MINION TIC-TACS! I ate another one of the Tic-Tacs to refresh my memory, then ate a dino egg. They don't taste the same initially, but the after tastes are very similar. What a bummer! I really love the look of these Dino Eggs, but I don't like eating them. I rather have more of the Caribbean punch.

Novelty products are usually really bad, but even though I may not have liked every flavor in this box, it's still a really great product. There are no flavors I would go out of my way to avoid, I just liked some better than others. I might be biased because I think everything about this product is really pretty, but I would recommend buying it. The box looks cool, the candies inside are stunning, and there are some pretty good flavors in here. It's a tropical-mix, so if you're into those kinds of flavors, you should definitely check this one out. (Or if you just really like dinosaurs. That's cool too.)

  1. I am sorry to say but these candies have genetically engineered organisms in it and must be labeled as such in the EU.
