Marukawa Gum - ??? : Chinatown, Philadelphia, PA
In this strip I have…
Some of you might be thinking, “Didn’t you already review grape?” I did. This is actually muscat. It is a different kind of grape that is quite popular in Japan and other countries. There are muscat gummies, sodas, wines, and jellies.
- Muscat
- Orange

I have already reviewed a few muscat flavored items here on Sometimes Foodie…
- Gummies, more Gummies
- Jelly Beans
- Gummy Choco
Prior to trying these sweets I had no idea what muscat was or if it tasted any different than a traditional grape candy. I am happy to report that the taste is very distinct.
Once you pop this gum into your mouth you can taste a sweet, almost floral, white grape juice. It is very concentrated at first, but it quickly diminishes. (Boo! ;_;) If you have ever had Welch’s white grape juice, this tastes very similar.
A lot of the grape candies and gums here in America use the classic artificial grape that we associate with jelly or preserves, but this is more like a golden raisin or a white grape juice. Sweet, crisp, floral, and very different from it’s purple counterpart.
Again I love the flavor, but it only lasts for a minute or two. (Think of the Zebra Stripe gum we have here in the States, even that gum has longer lasting flavor than this one.) Marukawa has a fantastic product, it just need to work on getting the flavor to stick around.
