White-Gourd Drink - SunSeung Market: Pennsauken, NJ

White-Gourd Drink - SunSeung Market: Pennsauken, NJ
I remember seeing a can of White-Gourd Drink on an episode of Cult Moo, one of my favorite youtube channels ever. I seem to recall Herr Pink saying this was "downright delicious," but I could be mistaken. (I've seen all of their videos so I might have mixed up my memories.) Either way, I was intrigued.

The best place to start my search was the SunSeung Market, since it's so close to my house, and I found it! As it turns out, a lot of Asian companies produce a White-Gourd Drink, so I just picked the prettiest can.

As you can see, the can is a pale green color with swirls of vines and green leaves. I am not a big Disney fan, but the design makes me think of Cinderella and her pumpkin carriage, or a shōjo manga. (Seriously. It has tons of little white highlights and sparkles.) This design stood out from all of the others, so it's quite successful.

I opened the can and the smell was appealing, but unexpected.

The liquid inside smells like pandan.

I have mentioned pandan in previous posts. Basically, pandan is a plant that flavors various sweets and desserts. It's naturally a bright green color, in fact I used it to color and flavor the green marshmallow fondant on my pixel Link cake, and it smells nutty.
Time to take a taste.

I poured some liquid into a glass and I was a bit shocked by the coloring. It looks like some kind of green tea. The first sip was intense, this stuff is seriously sweet. As far as the flavoring, it's nutty and refreshing, very similar to pandan. I actually liked the overall taste of this drink, but the sweetness was too intense. (I actually cringed during my second sip. That's how sweet this stuff is.) This stuff is only made with three ingredients: Water, sugar, and white-gourd.

I decided to do a bit of research, which means look this stuff up on my phone using Wikipedia, and it turns out that White-Gourds and Winter Melon are the same thing. Also, it turns out that a lot of bloggers and youtubers made posts about this beverage.
Out of all the reactions I found online, I agree with THIS one. This drink may be sickeningly sweet, but it's still quite refreshing, and the flavor isn't as off putting as the other bloggers made it out to be. I don't think I would buy this again, but it honestly wasn't that bad. (It just needs less sugar.)
