This was a silly little Easter gift from my boyfriend, and while the product itself is far from revolutionary, I thought the packaging was pretty cute and worthy of a quickie review.
I remember reading a review on this item over at Candyblog a few years ago. Although the foil wrapping and the product inside hasn't changed since 2008, the packaging has been entirely redesigned and updated. The new design and color choices are much more appealing, but the cardboard box that protects the hollow egg is bigger and bulkier than ever before. Even the window cut out for the egg seems too big for it. This product is supposed to focus on the candy, but this box causes the pink foil-covered egg to get lost.
On it's own, the egg is pretty cute, but I feel like Just Born went overboard with the branding. The Peeps logo and marshmallow chick are printed on the cardboard box five times, it's on the foil wrapper along with another actual image of a Peep, and little chicks and Peeps logos are all over the chocolate. I get it. This is Peeps. It's branding overkill, and I think less could be more. The marshmallow chick on the foil is enough, we don't need another logo, and the box should try to cut the branding down from five to three repeats at the most.
Getting to the candy itself, it's pretty darn cute, but it's a novelty item. The chocolate isn't the best quality, it tastes similar to a Hershey's Kiss, and the marshmallow tastes the same as any other marshmallow Peep. When combined, the flavors work well together, but it isn't anything phenomenal.
Since Just Born now offers chocolate dipped Peeps year round, you don't need to worry about missing out on this chocolatey marshmallow treat. If you see these in the Easter clearence section, I'd say they're worth a try.
