Peeps Cotton Candy? Worth buying?

Peeps Cotton Candy with Marshmallows
- Target

Peeps cotton candy with marshmallows. Is it just normal cotton candy? Marshmallow flavored cotton candy? I'm not entirely sure, but there ARE tiny freeze dried marshmallows inside, and I love cereal marshmallows, so I had to check it out.

PEEPSI - Peeps Flavored Pepsi

Why is this not labeled "PEEPSI?" Sure, it's silly, but this is soda flavored like marshmallow chicks. If the time to be silly isn't now, then when? (It's very fun to say out loud. You should try it.)

I've reviewed a veritable glut of Peep flavors on the blog, so even though they're a pretty divisive candy, safe to say, I fricken love them and, like I mentioned in my Dr. Pepper (Dr. Peepers) post, I prefer them aged like a fine wine. (AKA: Stale AF.) But I'm also a Pepsi drinker. So, Peeps flavored Pepsi for a Peep-loving Pepsi drinking casual food blogger? Yes, please!

Dr. PEEPers!

Dr. Pepper Peeps - Walmart

I went to Target to grab some baby shower gifts, and was practically punched in the face with novelty Peep products: Ring pops, Peeps-on-a-stick, plushies, hot cocoa, Peep-flavored-Pepsi, (aka "Peep-si")...but not this.

I think it's Walmart exclusive, which is where I picked it up, and while Target may have Peep-themed everything else, I think Walmart still came out on top. But I'm definitely biased. I love Dr. Pepper and I love Peeps (especially stale ones), so it's like this was made for me.

Mallo Cup, is that you? - Reese's Mallow-Top

Mallow-Top Reese's Cup - Walgreens

We all know I dislike white chocolate, but I love marshmallows, so when this item was announced I was torn. On the one hand, fluffernutter sandwiches are amazing, and this has the protentional to taste like that AND chocolate. Brilliant combination, right? Or it'll taste like white-chocolate grossness. It's kind of a 50/50 chance.

With those odds, I didn't want to overcommit. Luckily for me, this flavor is available in a wide array of sizes, 5-packs, big bags for Easter, and this handy dandy two pack. Let's see what we're dealing with here and if I made the right decision.

Better than Oreo - Benton's Carrot Cake Creme Filled Cookies

Carrot Cake Creme Filled Cookies - Aldi

Easter is literally this weekend. How did that happen? Where does the time go? I think munching on clearance Valentine's Day candy post-holiday has messed with my perception of seasonal snacking time. Spring is officially here! To celebrate, I have another seasonal Aldi cookie.

You know, after how bad the Hot Cocoa Cremes were (I ultimately threw them out) I thought I would be done with Benton's seasonal cookies, but the Red Velvet Cake flavor really did win me over.  Let's hope that Carrot Cake is just as awesome.

Mr. Owl's Eggs? - Tootsie Roll Eggs

Tootsie Roll EggsDollar Tree

Tootsie Rolls are one of those products I never think to buy on their own, but I am always happy to see it in a candy dish or in a seasonal candy bag. They're simple, chewy, chocolatey, and unlike other candies, they still taste exactly how I remember them. (Can't say the same about Crunch bars or Buncha Crunch, have you guys eaten those lately? What the heck happened to it?!)

Other than a few new flavors of Tootsie Pops over the years, like banana, pomegranate and others, there hasn't been much innovation to their product line. Which is why these Tootsie Eggs, essentially Tootsie Rolls with a crispy sugary shell, were so intriguing. Would it drastically change my opinion on the candy? After all, I'm a sucker for a crispy shell. I love chicklet-style gum, I love the candy shell on Cadbury eggs, m&m's, and the Reese's cup with Reese's Pieces mixed in is phenomenal. Probably my favorite new thing Reese's has done in the last 5 years. So, why not see what a crispy shell can do for a classic like Tootsie.

Pucker Up - Lemon Crisp Kit-Kats

Lemon Crisp Kit-Kat - Walgreens

Hi everyone! I disappeared again. (Sorry!) In my defense, my one-year pandemi-versary is coming up and reflecting on the past year has put my head in a weird place. I am still surrounded by candy and things I want to post about, but editing the photos and typing posts requires a level of focus that I just don't have right now. I'm trying to schedule a bunch of reviews over the weekend to fix all that, but in the meantime, there's a new Kit-Kat in town!

Skip the scoop and have a Peep Instead?

Neapolitan Peeps - Target $1.66
The Peeps floodgates have opened! We have a ton of "new" Peep flavors hitting the shelves. Why did I put "new" in quotes? Well...most of them aren't really new.
This season, we've got...
  • Kroger gets Pancakes & Syrup (One of last year's Mystery Flavors, unmasked & re-released)
  • All Grocery Stores are getting Sour Cherry (Another Mystery Flavor, unmasked & re-released)
  • Cotton Candy Peeps (re-release, I saw them at Target, unsure if they're exclusive)
  • Lemon and Orange Sherbet Peeps (Very similar to previous orange & lemon Delights)
  • Walmart has the NEW trio of Mystery Peep Flavors - Actually New
  • Target has filled Neapolitan and Triple Chocolate Delights - Also New
In that sea of marshmallow chick-shaped sweets, there's a lot of old ideas being rehashed. In all honesty, I've always liked original Peeps (Especiaolly when they start to get a little stale), but a of of the fancier flavors they've released over the years just don't appeal to me. Especially the Delights line. That "fudge" dripped bottom is a waxy coating of lies. In what way is that fudge?
Even though I am no fan of the "fudge dipped" delights, I couldn't pass up a filled peep, especially one with a Neapolitan flavor profile. All the new flavors we have seen over the years are great, but the combination of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry is timeless. If it's done right...
So, let's see if these are a real Delight, or a fake-fudge-failure.

Starburst Ice Cream Jelly Beans - AKA Candy-Coated-LIES

Starburst Ice Cream Jelly Beans - Target $1.99 (on sale)
I've been against this mix since the day CandyHunting spotted it on the showroom floor. Sure, "Ice Cream Starburst Jelly Beans," may sound great, but this is all flash with no substance.

Look at these flavors! We've got: lemon sorbet, strawberry, orange sherbet, and red raspberry. I like sorbet and sherbet as much as anyone, but they are NOT ice cream. Not only is this mix poorly named, but it's (almost) completely unoriginal! With the exception of red raspberry, these flavors are re-named repeats from the original Starburst jelly bean line-up. I declare shenanigans!

I planned on going with my gut, and leaving this product on the shelves, but...I'm a sucker for a bargain. These were on sale at Target for $1.99, so though it'd be interesting to see if my gut feeling about this product was on-the-money.

Cadbury Creme Egg Cookies - Target

Cadbury Creme Egg Cookies - Target
Hippity Hoppity Easter....was a month ago,. Whoops. So happy #tbt to you all!
Last year these limited edition cookies were plastered all over social media and they were driving all of us American food bloggers crazy because we didn't get them. (Although we get plenty of stuff other countries don't, it's just that "grass is always greener" thing we all experience from time to time in the heat of an awesome foodie moment.) This year Cadbury got the memo and realized they could make even more money selling these limited edition cookies overseas, so this Easter they were being sold at Target along with a couple other Cadbury products. I may have gone a little overboard because I grabbed two packages the moment I saw them. I mean, they're Cadbury Eggs in COOKIE form! How could that go wrong?

Easter Sundae m&m's - Walmart

Easter Sundae m&m's - Walmart
R.I.P. my beloved Carrot Cake m&m's, you had a good run, but Easter Sundae has taken your place as the Walmart exclusive flavor this year. I know a lot of food bloggers didn't really care for them, but I'm sad to see them go. (They were the perfect addition to oatmeal and carrot cake cookies for spring!) Even though I was heartbroken by the seasonal flavor swap, I was kind of excited too. When I think of ice cream sundaes I think of hot fudge, cherries, Neapolitan ice cream, and whipped cream. Judging by the name, I thought this was going to be some kind of candy equivalent to those banana split style ice creams that pack multiple flavors into one pint, but it turns out this is just a chocolate and vanilla m&m. I don't know if my expectations were too high, but this sounds boring to me. Oh well, let's see if this sundae is worthy of taking Carrot Cake's place.

White Strawberry Shortcake m&m's - Target (exclusive)

White Strawberry Shortcake m&m's - Target (exclusive)
New year, new limited edition m&m flavors! Recently the cherry flavored ones were re-released, and Walmart had some new chocolate-based strawberry ones (review coming soon), and now we have these fancy white chocolate Strawberry Shortcake ones that are Target exclusive! I guess 2016 is the year of the strawberry, and as a fan of all things berry flavored, I'm all about it!

Boom Chicka Pop Lemon Drop Kettle Corn - Target: Marlton, NJ

Boom Chicka Pop Lemon Drop Kettle Corn
- Target: Marlton, NJ
Here's one of the goodies I scooped on on Easter clearance. I was originally going to buy one of those Peep-shaped lollipops, but this bag of popcorn was the same price. One lollipop versus a whole bag of popcorn? I think I made the right choice.

Every time I see this brand on the shelves I sing THIS song by Superbus inside my head. The brand name just fits into the song so well! "Boom-Chicka-Pop!" (I went to Paris for three days way back when I was in middle school, the best thing about my trip was watching the French version of MTV and learning about foreign pop music. If you like Tchi-Cum-Bah check out my favorite song, Lola)

Enough rambling and pop music, on to the review!

Lemon Delight Peeps - Target: Marlton, NJ

Lemon Delight Peeps - Target: Marlton, NJ

All of these Limited Edition Peeps were in the Easter clearance sections, even though I am pretty sure they weren't released as Easter-specific items, but cheap candy is cheap candy! Who am I to complain? There were lemon, lime and orange versions, and although all three were there, I decided to just grab the lemon and the lime because they were the ones I was most interested in.

Peeps Mystery Chicks- Walmart: Berlin, NJ

Peeps Mystery Chicks- Walmart: Berlin, NJ
I technically reviewed these in this Candyology101 podcast, but I like doing write ups even when I review items in different media. (Like audio or video.) It's nice to get to discuss the items with more detail, and I like taking foodie photos, so here's the official written post for Mystery Peeps!

Carrot Cake Cookies - Aldi: Marlton, NJ

Carrot Cake Cookies - Aldi: Marlton, NJ
Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate. It seems like carrot cake is becoming a popular flavor for Easter cookies and sweets, and while I like the trend, a lot of the items have been way too sweet for my personal preferences. I like the idea behind these cookies, but that layer of white chooclate has me a bit worried.

Choceur Flame Egg - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ

Choceur Flame Egg - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ
I still have a few Easter-y goodies to review, so I am going to try to knock these out as quickly as I can before the holiday and then I'll start digging into the items from my Asian Food Haul video. There's a LOT of photos for this one, so let's get started.

Candyology101 Episode 11: JELLY BEANS! (Easter Part 2)

Our Easter show was too big for one podcast, so we split it into two! In episode 10 Cybele and I discussed all the chocolatey goodies you'll be wanting in your Easter baskets, the classic Chocolate Easter bunny, and I tried Mystery Peeps on air. Today's show focuses more on our favorite Easter candies and another iconic Easter treat, Jelly beans!

Tune in (do people even say that anymore?) and find out what jelly beans you should scoop up after the holidays.

(Click the Candyology link to see all the different items we talk about in this podcast and find out where you can buy it!)
