Cricket-Protein and Slim Jim Shakes at Wayback Burger? And it's not even April Fools?

Okay, so a friend of mine posted this on Facebook, I saw it and laughed thinking it was a gag...but it's not?!

Apparently these were announced on June 29th, and they're totally real.
I don't know about you, but I am no where near adventurous enough to eat cricket-based protein powder, even with chocolate to cover it up.

I might try the Slim Jim variety (only if it's cricket-free), but is this just a shock tactic? Are there people out there so protein-crazed that they are demanding bug-based shakes? I get it, protein is really trendy right now, but this? This has to be a ploy to get a ton of publicity. If so, it works! Here I am writing about it right now.

What is the foodie world coming to? Will any of you be trying the Oreo Mud Pie Cricket shake?

  1. Umm, excuse me... I ordered the Grasshopper shake, not the Cricket shake! This is fodder for an Abbot & Costello routine.

I hope this cricket flour trend fades fast. I can't imagine it will catch on in the mass market, but my fear is that it'll gain some amount of acceptance after they give it some non-cricket-sounding brand name, and in time they start sneaking it into tons of foods to boost the protein content. Sorry to jump right to dystopian future, but the thought of this drink existing just brings me there.

  2. A couple of years ago, when this whole "eat bugs! - it's healthy and ecological"-thing started, i watched a report where they tricked people into eating bugs. They simply blended the bugs into meal and made normal looking food with it (like a hamburger patty for example). _All_ the tester said the dishes were delicious (even after they heard the food was made from bugs).

Long story short: i'm pretty sure if you can get over the idea eating a cricket the milkshake can taste good. And yes, i would rather try the ricket milkshake than the slim jim version, which is only allowed to be called "slim jim jerky" milkshake because there are two of them sticking inside the shake... ^^

  3. I had thought this was some local name that I hadn't yet encountered. Like "mud pie" has no mud in it, I figured "cricket shake" couldn't really have cricket in it. Blech! I would never ever try that.
