Pumpkin Spice Twinkie-Dogs - Reader Suggested Foodie Mash-Up!

The other day I received a really intriguing comment...
Pumpkin Spiced Twinkie-Dogs? I still had 5 Twinkies left, and a pack of hot dogs in the fridge, so I took it as a sign that I should try Caitlin J.'s suggestion for dinner when I got home from work and...

Caitlin, you are a food-mash-up genius of Willy Wonka proportions!
This tastes way better than it has any right to.
I'm sure most of you have heard of the infamous Luther burger. If not, a "Luther" typically refers to a cheeseburger that uses glazed doughnuts instead of a burger bun. It's is a foodie pop culture staple, and although the burger fixings/toppings may vary from restaurant-to-restaurant, the overall concept is to create a decadent (and crazy bad for you) combination of sweet and savory junkfood flavors.

There's also the less popular Twinkie Wiener Sandwich, which was shown in Weird Al's UHF. This is another popculture foodie legend, but it's not as well known or mainstream as the Luther. Here we have a normal Twinkie used as a hot dog bun with spray-cheese that's dipped in milk.

What Caitlin J. has created is the perfect marriage of those two popculture foodie Frankenstein creations.
When you take a bite of the Pumpkin Spiced Twinkie-Dog, you get sweet cake and creme, with a hint hint of pumpkin spice, and the savory slightly charred flavor of a grilled hot dog. It may sound (and look) weird, but it really does work! The spices bring something to the table that a normal Twinkie wouldn't which gives the hot dog a little bit of an Easter ham-like twist that I really enjoyed.
As far as toppings, I wasn't sure what I should go with so I just did a plain ol' Twinkie dog for today's post, but I've already got ideas for the future. I think some crumbled bacon might amp this up with some more smokey and salty flavors, or maybe even a whole grain mustard if I wanted to make it a little classier. I could see them both of those toppings working really well here. So, what do you guys think? It obviously not something that should be eaten every day, but it really is worth trying at least once. Will you be trying this combo for yourself? If so, what toppings would you use?
Super special THANK YOU to Caitlin J. for suggesting this! It was a lot of fun to make and (surprisingly) a lot of fun to eat!

  1. Oh no. This seems like one of these things that will continue to obsess me until I succumb. As if either component wasn't unhealthy enough by itself. As a reformed / recovering junk food addict, crazy new ideas like this make me (happily) backslide!

  2. The logical next step is to put the hot dog on a stick, jam it into the twinkie, then deep-fry the sucker.
