American Thanksgiving is upon us, and if I had to pick a favorite side dish, it would be stuffing. Like pizza, it's hard for me to find a "bad" stuffing. (For the record, my aunt Missy makes my absolute favorite version,) but boxed mixes will do in a pinch. The combination of warm bread with herbs and spices is comforting, which must be why so many brands this year released stuffing themed products.
Normally there are a few here and there, like the Boulder kettle chips I had a few years ago, but this year companies really outdid themselves with house-branded stuffing items. I grabbed a few to try this year.
First up, these stuffing themed crackers from Aldi.
This was the first time I saw this product, BUT it looks like it was released last year and I somehow missed it. Like many Aldi products, this had two variations. This stuffing themed one with a cartoon turkey on it, and a blue box with a cartoon chicken theme. Chicken in a Biscuit was never something I reached for, it reminded me of instant chicken flavored ramen, but stuffing? That was right up my alley. Plus crackers are a fun easy snack to pack for work, so hopefully these are yummy and can be added to my work rotation for the rest of the week.
Packaging wise, I really like the oval graphic and the illustration. It's simple, and bold. It almost looks like a fake brand you might see in a movie production, but I like it. Something about it just makes me smile, and I'll take all the serotonin I can get.
Opened, the wavy crackers inside smell like turkey stuffing, as promised. It's a warm, savory aroma, with the same herbs and spices you'd find in a stove top stuffing blend: garlic, onion, celery, and rosemary.Taking a bite, these are pretty damn good. The initial flavoring is salty and a bit like chicken bullion, but the herbaceous blend of seasonings pull it into stuffing territory. The cracker is buttery and a bit dry, but that's to be expected for a cracker. It's the seasoning on the outside that elevates this snack.
I really enjoy these, and could seem them being a good base for an appetizer. Imagine one of these, a bit of cranberry jam, and a slice of sharp white cheddar. Or serving these alongside a cranberry baked brie!
I will definitely devour this box, but I wonder if I can use the Everything but the Leftovers seasoning from Trader Joe's on standard buttery crackers to recreate these out-of-season? Once this box is gone, I may have to give that a try.
If you like stuffing, and are planning to use crackers in any way during your holiday meal, I recommend giving these a try.
