I really like licorice, especially fruit flavored ones. I've had strawberry, mango, green apple...but never lemon or lemonade. The combination sounded perfect to me, espeically for spring, so I immediately tossed it into my cart. The brand is Wiley Wallaby, which I'm not familiar with. I tend to go with Darrell Lea for my fruity licorice cravings, but this seems to be another well known and widely available brand. And how different can a fruity licorice really be?
Opened, the pieces are quite robust. You have thick 1.5" long lemon-flavored licorice ropes that are about the thickness of my pinky finger. (I have pretty big hands though, so keep that in mind.) While they look yellowy and translucent, like lemon meringue pie filling, they don't really smell like much at all.Right now I'm 24-days into calorie counting and working out, so I'm more aware of portions. With this, one serving is 3 pieces for 80 calories. That's the calorie equivalent to a cup of grapes, or 22 oyster crackers, 4 mini Cadbury eggs (the ones with the hard sugary shell) or 1.25 cups of Smartfood popcorn. Not the most fulfilling snack for the calories, but not the worst either.
Taking a bite it's...bland. Much more bland than I had hoped for. I really wanted tangy, sweet, zesty lemon. In the same vein as the pie filling I mentioned earlier, but this is more like a lemon flavored chapstick. I'm pretty disappointed. I guess that's what I get for straying from Darrell Lea.
Since I've been rating with number in my previous posts, I'll keep that trend going. This one gets a 2/5 for me. It's edible, and not terrible, this is more texture than it is flavor.
