Tastykake Pumpkin Spice Mini Donuts - Target
There are only 11 days left in November?! When they heck did that happen? I guess my aversion to all things wintery, cold, and Santa-related made me lose track of time, and guess what? I still have a massive pile of pumpkin products to get through! I better get started...
Back in the spring/summer I reviewed the limited edition strawberry version, which was in pretty much the same bag, so there's nothing really new as far as the packaging is concerned. All they really did was swap the color scheme and images to relate to fall. I love the contrast of the orange bag with the classic Tastykake blue, but I feel like that was bound to happen, I mean these are pumpkin spiced, how could the bag not be orange? The packaging keeps the donuts as fresh as pre-made grocery store donuts can be, and it's resealable at the top, which is always awesome, so overall this is pretty nice. Just not my favorite.
I opened the bag, and the spiced coating smells sweet, cinnamon-heavy, and a little bit like pumpkin pie filling. I have to mention that the aroma is pretty artificial, and on the processed side, but this is Tastykake. I don't think any of you would open this and expect fresh baked doughnuts, or a gourmet French pastry. It's processed cake doughnuts sold in a bag at the grocery store. For what this is, the smell is pretty appealing. (Although I am a Tastykake hater.) Okay, let's give this a try...
Wow! Did all my tastebuds die? Or is this actually good? This is seriously one of the best Tastykake products I've ever had. (Did hell just freeze over?) Normally I hate all these premade snack cakes and pastries, but these little doughnuts are really dense, moist, and the pumpkin flavoring is just strong enough to be enjoyable, without getting into the dreaded Bath & Body Works territory. I really didn't think I was going to like these at all, but I really love them!
The spice blend is only slightly different from their normal cinnamon-coated donuts, but the donut itself is incredibly dense and chewy. This is what a cake doughnut should be! Can I get something far fresher and fancier at a real bakery? Sure! But as far as pumpkin spiced grocery store mini-donuts go, (which is admittedly a small market) these are damn good! I bet they'd be awesome paired with a hot cup of coffee.
On a Pumpkin Scale of 1-5 (5 being the most pumpkin-y) I’d give this a 4.5! I'm normally a Tastykake hater, but these little donuts have actually won me over. They're moist, the pumpkin spice blend is well balanced, and pretty addicting. I think this might be my favorite Tastykake product ever.
Aversion to wintry and Santa-related things? Nooooooo! You gotta embrace the Christmas season.
