Quickie Review: Sweet Chili Chicken Pizza - Papa John's: NJ

Sweet Chili Chicken Pizza - Papa John's: NJ
Remember this post?

This new flavor had me a bit skeptical, but I decided to try it anyway. I don't follow sports, so the only way I know our local teams win is when I receive a 50% off coupon in my email. (Go sports! Yay pizza!) I figured it was pretty cheap, since I got a smaller pizza, and the last new pizza I tried turned out to be really yummy, so why not give this new flavor a try?

Admittedly, I chose the worst day ever to redeem my cheap pizza. Although my area is pretty low, and we have the potential to flood, it rarely happens. Last week we had a big rain storm that caused all of the major highways near my home to turn into rivers. Since I'm cheap frugal, I thought I'd save a few bucks and just grab the pizza on my way home. Welp, my little pizza run turned into a 2 hour traffic-filled nightmare.

Once I finally got this pizza I really hoped it would taste awesome and be totally worth the drive...

Sadly, it wasn't. The pizza was edible, but this is something I could very easily recreate at home for a really cheap price. (Although I don't really want to.)

The special sauce, that is meant to replace the normal tomato sauce, tasted just like the sweet chili sauce for chicken you can buy at the Asian food market. I have a bottle of that stuff in my pantry right now, toss that onto some pizza dough with some chicken chunks, mozzarella, and a handful of canned pineapple chunks, and you can spot on recreate this pizza. The flavors were really sweet when combined, and there wasn't enough spice to keep me interested.

I really wanted to like this pizza, but I found it to be overly sweet and boring. If you're looking for something new and interesting to try this month, this isn't it.

I really wish the Cheeseburger Pizza would come back! It's National Burger Month, so it's the perfect time to indulge in some pickle-y pizza. Papa John's missed the marketing boat for that one, but there's still time to bring it back!
