I'm on the hunt for those Ghostbusters themed Key Lime Twinkies, but so far no luck. After checking my third Walmart I didn't want to leave empty handed, because it's not like a have a massive food backlog sitting at home waiting to be photographed and reviewed or anything... *cough**cough*, so why not grab a box of banana Twinkies while I was there?
Twinkies are this huge pop culture phenomenon, being referenced in movies like Ghostbusters and Zombieland, but I've never been a fan. However, I do love banana (and Ghostbusters) so maybe I just haven't tried the right flavor yet. This could be the Twinkie to finally win me over to the processed snack cake side!
The packaging and overall design for these Twinkies is pretty much standard for all grocery store snack cake brands. It's bright, colorful, a little obnoxious, and appealing. I feel like all of these grocery store cakes look the same, and are easily interchangeable with one another (with a few exceptions here and there), so I can't really say I'm a fan of the overall look and layout. The only real stand-out part about it is the bold red "Twinkies" text. If you're a Twinkie fan I guess that text pulls you right in, otherwise this box is easily lost in the sea of snack cake products on the shelves.
Inside, each creme-filled Twinkie is individually wrapped with clear cellophane with the Hostess logo printed on it. I'm kind of surprised it's just "Hostess" and not Twinkie-specific branding on the individual wrappers.
I unwrapped the plastic and all I could smell was vanilla sponge cake and vanilla creme. There wasn't any bold or obnoxious banana aroma, which I was kind of hoping for, and the whole thing smells really waxy and processed. Typical for most grocery store cakes. They have all those oils and preservatives in there to keep things shelf stable, so it makes sense.
Tallahassee would be proud. One bite of this dense processed sponge cake and I was hooked! Banana Twinkies, where have you been all my life? The vanilla cake layer is really dense and oily, on-par with most grocery store sponge-cakes, while the filling is fluffy and shortening-based. This stuff coated my mouth with a slightly waxy but delicious banana pudding-like flavoring. I have a few food-snob-like tendencies, and hating processed snack cakes was one of them, but this? It won me over. This thing is super artificial, but...It's really delicious. I've been transformed into a fully converted Twinkie lover. (Which sounds oh so wrong.)
If you're like me and you've been on the fence about processed snack foods, the banana Twinkie is the way to go. It's artificial, but that doesn't make it any less tasty.
The original Twinkies did have banana creme. Can't remember why they changed it. So they're getting back to their banana roots. Must be the season for bananas, I think KrispyKreme still has their seasonal banana creme glazed pies although Peach just arrived.
