Pistachio (Ice Cream) Iced Coffee - Dunkin' Donuts

Pistachio (Ice Cream) Iced Coffee - Dunkin' Donuts
Back in college I lived off of espresso shots and caramel, but now-a-days I just drink water out of my oh so classy giant Walmart mason jar. I know that sounds super hipster-y, but trust me, I don't use it for the look. I use it because it's huge (it's a quart-sized soup jar for canning), and since it's nice and big, I only have to refill it 2-3 times a day. (I drink a LOT of water and constantly refilling a normal sized cup is annoying. I'mlazy.) Coffee got me through a lot of tough times in college, but I don't need that boost of energy in my every day life. (At least not yet.) I'll drink it maybe 4-5 times a year, but when Junk Banter posted a photo of Pistachio iced coffee at Dunkin' Donuts...I knew I was in trouble.

Watch out world, I'm caffeinated! (Be afraid. Be very afraid.)
On my way home from work I stopped at Dunkin' and got 3 iced pistachio coffees, one for my sister, another for my mother, and one for me. (I also grabbed a strawberry shortcake cronut, because why not?) We all love pistachios and pistachio ice cream, so we were super excited for this drink and we thought it'd be fun to try it together. (They love that I run this food blog. They get to enjoy all kinds of goodies and I treat them to ice cream flavored coffee.) All three had cream and sugar, because I wanted to try the drink as-is without any of my personal alterations to possibly mess with the flavoring.

Visually, this looks like any other iced coffee out there. I was kind of hoping it was going to be green, like the ice cream, but green food coloring in brown-tinged coffee with milk? I can see why they left the flavoring colorless. (Good move Dunkin')

The drink smells like...coffee. I can't smell any hint of pistachio nuts, but it does smell sweetened and maybe a bit vanilla-heavy. I saw them put the pistachio syrup into the cups, so I know it's in there, maybe it just doesn't smell all that strong?
I took my first sip, and it's pretty similar to coffee with a scoop of American pistachio ice cream. Not bad at all! The stuff we have here always tastes more like almonds than it does actual pistachios, which is yummy, but European gelatos and ice creams are much more flavorful and authentic. This is sweetened iced coffee with cream, sugar, and a hint of vanilla marzipan. I liked it a lot, and it's probably my the best iced coffee I've ever had from Dunkin' Donuts, but I wish it was more pistachio-heavy. Next time I'll skip the added sugar and get a double pump of pistachio. (Because there WILL be a next time. I've tasted blood coffee, and I want more!)  My sister and mother had their own coffees, but it seems like we all got varying amounts of pistachio syrup. My mother's had way more pistachio flavoring than the others, and tasted even more authentically ice-cream-like, which is why I know that I want to get another cup with twice as much syrup in the future, and my sister's had way less. Her's almost tasted like a plain vanilla iced coffee. The more syrup, the more authentic and bold the flavoring, which is just common sense, but I ordered all three drinks to be exactly the same, yet they came out entirely different.

I really liked this iced coffee, and I highly recommend it for those of you who like your coffee drinks to be sweet, but if your ordering in the store, I suggest taking a sip before you leave to make sure you're happy with your coffee experience.

EDIT: I drank the whole thing in 2 hours and between the caffeine and all the sugar, I was bouncing off the walls during my trip to IKEA tonight. Now, it's 1:30AM and I am crashing. Hard. Headache and all. I very very rarely drink coffee now, so it effected me really strongly, but this stuff was really yummy and I regret NOTHING! I'll still buy another one with more syrup in the future, but I'll have to sip it slowly and space it out over a longer period of time. I'm back to being a complete caffeine noob. Plus eating all the IKEA candy certainly didn't help...

  1. I actually just tried this yesterday and had the same experience as you, I enjoyed it but found the pistachio a bit more subtle than I had hoped and will definitely be getting an extra pump next time! The only difference between us was that mine was gone in about ten minutes because I have absolutely no self control whatsoever >.> I applaud you.

    1. I'm a coffee lightweight now since I haven't drank it steadily since college, so I have to nurse mine or I'll be bouncing off the walls. lol

When I get my second cup with a double pump I'll be sure to update the review, but even without the extra syrup this is still my favorite iced coffee from Dunkin'. #pistachioforever! ^_^

  2. I don't really drink coffee because I only like really sweet iced coffee (a.k.a. melted coffee ice cream!), so usually get extra sugar and extra cream! But I decided to be healthy and just add it black to my morning protein shake. When I ordered it black it looked just like the picture! Apparently the pistatchio mix makes it look creamy.. I decided to try it even though normally black coffee would make me run for the hills.. DELICIOUS! Don't need to add sugar or cream! Perfect sweetness. I hope they keep this flavor! Butter Pecan is also very good, but I've only tried it with cream and sugar. I can't wait to get my next one!
