Fruity Crisp Oreos - Wegman's

Fruity Crisp Oreos - Wegman's
Yesterday, on my way home from work, I stopped by my local Wegman's to see if these new Oreos were on the shelves yet...but no such luck. Not only did they not have the new Oreos, but they also didn't even have power! (FYI: Shopping in the dark was not as zombie-apocalypse-like as I thought it would be.)

We don't have very many Wegman's locations here in South Jersey, but from the press releases it looks like they're the only grocery chain in my area that will be carrying this special limited edition cookie. Not to be discouraged, I drove to the only other Wegman's in the area (which I affectionately call "the rich people Wegman's") that's way out near horse farms and giant fancy houses. It was a bit of a drive, and there was plenty of traffic, but the trip was a SUCCESS!

They're here! They're in my hands, and they're everything I had hoped they'd be!
Of the three Oreo flavors headed our way (which Junk Banter breaks down here) this was the flavor I was most excited for. I LOVED the rice crispy themed Oreos that came out a few years ago, and I was really looking forward to a new variation on that crispy mixed-in theme.

The packaging is a bright sunny yellow, like most vanilla-based Oreo cookies, and the food illustration adds some pleasant contrast (thanks to the blue bowl) as well as a much needed POP of color. It looks very Fruity Pebbles-like, without being "Fruity Pebbles," because, you know, copyrights and all that jazz.

Again, we have another weird package with no obvious way to open and reseal it. There's no twist-down top and no resealable front flap, which is a little annoying, but I guess I'll just have to transfer these to a ziplock bag later...that is, if any of them survive.

I used scissors to snip the package open, and soon as I did, I could smell the sweet but slightly citrus-y aroma of Fruity Pebbles. Oops, I mean "fruit crispy" cereal.

The cookies look like they're stuffed with Funfetti frosting, but they smell just like a freshly poured bowl of cereal. It's amazing how accurate this aroma is!
In true Sometimes Foodie fashion, I have to try both components separately before eating the cookie together, as intended.

On it's own, the cookie smells really cereal like, but it tastes like a normal Golden vanilla Oreo...until the very end. That's when you get that tangy, but sweet, citrus cereal flavoring on the sides of your tongue. I don't think the cookie itself is flavored at all, I think this flavoring is from being in contact with the creme because...
This creme filling is a cereal lovers dream! Cereal Milk has been on trend with fancy hipster foodies for quite some time, but it's finally making it's way to the general consumer market, and this? It's beautifully executed!
Although it still leaves my mouth feeling waxy, like all Oreo creme fillings, this stuff is sweet, milky, fruity, and a little tangy. Imagine eating a fruit flavored cereal that stayed crunchy in milk. That's the filling of this Oreo. It delivers exactly what it promised with a crispy cereal-like crunch and I couldn't be happier!
Out of all the limited edition Oreos we've had so far in 2016, this filling seems to be the only one strong enough to stand up to the golden Oreo cookie. Normally the cookie-part dulls the flavoring inside, but this one still packs a punch even when eaten together as a normal cookie. (Although it does mellow out the cereal aspect a bit.)
To be honest, I was very close to giving up on this whole "limited Edition Oreo" game. All of us food bloggers feel this competitive DRIVE to find the new Oreo news and break the news before anyone else, as well as being the first to find them and review them...but after several lack luster flavors and seasonal re-releases, I was getting really tired of it all. If the flavors are "meh" and I know before buying them that they'll be "meh"...why  am I doing it? I really thought I'd step out of the creme filled cookie ring...until this flavor was announced.
I am happy to say, this flavor in particular was good enough to make this jaded food blogger hype about limited edition Oreos again. If you love fruity breakfast cereals, or cereal milk flavored ice creams and sweets, these cookies will NOT disappoint. They're authentically flavored, fun, and just looking at them makes me smile. I'm really glad I bought them and I can't wait to share these with my friends and family.
