Elotes, aka "Mexican Street Corn," has been popping up all over American grocery shelves. We had corn chips, crunchy Cheetos, various dips, and now a Pringle.
If you've never had Elotes, I highly recommend it. They're a bit messy to eat, but they activate all your taste buds. We have sweet, salty, cheesy, creamy, buttery, tangy, zesty, and spicy. All at once. While I've had nothing but positive experiences with Elote-themed items, I find that no snack food can truly capture this dish. They have gotten close, but it's not quite the same thing.
That said, I am excited to try these Pringles but I am keeping my expectations grounded.
When opened, the chips inside look pretty lightly seasoned, but when you flip them over you can see a pale yellow build-up of seasoning on the under-side of the chip. They smell tangy, kind of like sour cream, mixed with lime, but not in a juicy citrus sense, more like Tajin, and salty.
Taking a bite, the seasoning is bright and refreshing. Very different from other Pringles flavors I've tried. With elotes being such a rich, tangy, buttery, savory, spicy, and juicy snacking experience, I can safely say this does NOT taste like elotes. But it is good. This is Pringles sour cream and onion meets Tajin. I'm into it!
Easily the best Pringles flavor I have had in a long time. It's bright, creamy, salty, just a little cheesy, and it has just the tiniest bit of spice all wrapped in potato-y goodness. I really hope this limited run did well and we might see it again, or it could become part of the normal line-up, because of all the limited edition flavors of Pringles I have ever tried, this is the one I would actually re-buy for my own snacking.
If you like lime-infused snack foods, like hint of lime tortilla chips, this is definitely for you. If you are a lover of Tajin and put it on everything, these might be a bit too weak for your liking, but I still say they're worth a shot!
Gah! So jealous, I'm STILL searching for the Street Corn flavor! Now this one?! The hunt is on! lol
