Maid-Marion-berry Cheesecake Ice Cream

A while back I picked up a pint of Honeycomb flavored Van Leeuwen's ice cream from the Walmart clearance section. Turns out, it wasn't clearance at all. (There were a dozen of the exact same pint in the discount freezer case, so it wasn't like, a single accidental pint or something.) Annoyed, but already at checkout, I bought it anyway. It sounded yummy, even though it was $7.00! Upon getting home I cracked it open, and it was delicious.

Then certain flavors started showing up at Lidl, and I thought, why not see what else they had to offer?

Like Marionberry cheesecake.

Marionberries are basically blackberries. The internet says differently, and scientifically I'm sure there is plenty of evidence to back that up, but to the layman-foodie...they're blackberries.

So what we have here is a cheesecake ice cream base, with graham cracker crust-clusters (crustlers?), and a swirl of marionberry jam.

The base is dense, rich, and creamy. So much more decadent and custard-like then other ice creams. I guess that's' what's "French," about it. I'm not a big cheesecake person, I find the dessert to be a bit too dense and one-note in flavor for my liking, but this is really enjoyable. It's more of a custard-y gelato than the typical cream cheese-American take on cheese cake. That said, I like it, but don't love it. In spite of it's lovely texture, I'm still not a cheesecake person.

When it comes to mix-ins, sadly, the graham crust-crumbles are lackluster. They are dry, hard to get your spoon into, and very mild in flavor. I think if they had some cinnamon or something in there it would help, but as-is, I find myself avoiding them and seeking out the jam swirls instead.

Jam is the star of this pint. It's bright and tangy, with a lovely authentic fruit flavor and some pulpy bits and seeds. The jam cuts through everything else and it's easily my favorite part of the pint.

I loved the jam, but it's not enough to make me ever repurchase this pint. While I loved the honey comb flavor, this one is kind of a dud for me. I liked it, and destroyed the pint in a few days with some after-work snacking, but I don't think I'll be picking this one up again.
