Starting the week with a handful of coffee - Espresso m&m's

Coffee and chocolate go together like peanut butter and jelly. The combination is a no-brainer, which must be why m&m's keeps revisiting it.

We've had:

    • Pumpkin Spice latte m&m's - review
    • Coffee Nut m&m's
    • Crunchy Espresso m&m's - review
    • Café Mocha m&m's - review
    • Caramel Cold Brew m&m's

And now these. What makes these any different from it's predecessors?

Well, if you want to be nit-picky, the colors are unique to this bag, and they are "normal" m&m's, so there's no peanuts, no crispy center, no caramel. That removed most of the competition, except for the Café Mocha.

I'd say that's the most one-to-one comparison flavor. But, the catch? Those where purely milk chocolate based, and this is a mixture of milk AND dark chocolate. See?! Totally unique and different. (She typed. Sarcastically.)

While these are nothing revolutionary, I do think this might be my favorite take on a coffee m&m.

The dark chocolate helps to bring out more of the espresso flavor and makes the candy less sweet, but don't let that scare you off. They're still plenty sweet. More sweet that I like to take my coffee or espresso drinks, but compared to other m&m coffee variations (with caramel, crispy cookie centers, and milk chocolate), there is a notable lack of sweetness here which I really like. I think it's a slightly more mature flavor, but anyone who likes chocolate covered espresso beans, would probably enjoy these.

The bag doesn't say limited edition, or seasonal, but Brown is wearing a Santa hat and, after a quick Google search, I don't see any other variation of this package online. So...is this a seasonal flavor?  Seems like an odd choice for the winter holiday season, especially when coffee is more of a year-round kind of flavor.

In a sea of novelty m&m's, I think this one stands out as being well executed, mature, and versatile. As someone who loves to bake, I could definitely see myself adding these to brownie or cookie batter in the kitchen. Or even in banana muffins!

If you like espresso, I definitely thinks these are worth checking out. Especially if you can scoop them up on clearance!
