Hi-Chew Fantasy Mix

When I started the blog over a decade ago (time is so weird!), Hi-Chew was much harder for me to find. I used to stock up during my trips to the Asian Food Market (RIP), but now you can find it everywhere.

With it being more readily available, I actually found myself losing interest and buying it less over the years. (I guess scarcity makes the heart grow fonder.) That is until I saw this bag at Target. While all three flavors sound fun, it was the Rainbow Sherbet that sealed the deal!

I'm not so sure what these flavors have in common, or even what I should expect with a "fantasy" mix. Two out of the three are blue themed, one is a frozen dessert, one is a drink, and one is a common artificial flavor. I would say two of the three are tropical (although the sherbet is a stretch,) and blue raspberry is the only one that is kind of just a fruit. Am I missing an overall theme here? The writing on the bag doesn't exactly help.

But, as Charlie Bucket says in the bizarre Tim Burton film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), "Candy doesn't have to have a point." So, here we are.

There are three flavors in this mix: Blue Hawaii, Blue Raspberry, and Rainbow Sherbet.

Blue Raspberry
- Surprisingly it doesn't taste "blue," right away. It starts out very raspberry-forward, but it's not an entirely authentic raspberry. It's bold and artificial, but more real than I expected. The longer you chew, the more of a recognizable blue popsicle flavor reveals itself. It's pleasant and I would say it tastes more "purple" than "blue," but I like it.

Blue Hawaiian - This one is pretty weird. It has notes of pineapple, but it's also bubblegum-y. I can taste a touch of winter green and maybe coconut? While I normally enjoy tropical flavors, something about this one seems off. If I had to liken it to anything, it'd be ramune. Definitely my least favorite of the three.

Rainbow Sherbet - My favorite of the three! I can taste orange, lime, and raspberry. They're sweet and creamy, and on-point. It's very recognizable and enjoyable. I wish there were more of these in the bag or that this flavor was available on it's own. So glad that it lived up to my expectations. If you like the flavors of lime/orange/raspberry style rainbow sherbet, you'll enjoy this.

While I enjoyed this mix, I definitely think the Rainbow Sherbet is the star of the show. I wouldn't buy this bag again for myself, since the other two flavors are 'meh' for my tastes, but I do hope to see Sherbet again in other mixes or a stand alone bag in the future.
