Pumpkin Cheesecake Square Doughnut - Dunkin' Donuts

Pumpkin Cheesecake Square Donut - Dunkin' Donuts
Oh man, that long weekend wasn't relaxing at all! I don't know about the rest of you, but I am super sore and more tired now than I was when I left work on Friday. Then again, I did go to First Friday in Philly, and the next day I hosted a BBQ where I cooked a ton of food, and the day after that I went back to Philly to paint a room in my grandfather's house (including the ceiling) and to top it all off, yesterday I went through my giant backlogged food-hoard and photographed a ton of stuff to get ready for the upcoming pumpkin-fest that is fall.
Oh well, at least this will be a short work week.
We're all heading back to school and work, and what better way to celebrate than with a doughnut for breakfast.
I walked into the Dunkin' Doughnuts and took a look at everything on the racks. They had the Reese's square doughnut, and this one, and even though I love Reese's, I'm a little peanut buttered out after our last podcast. Since it's pretty much fall now, I went with the pumpkin one. So this will be my first official pumpkin review of 2015!
Instead of waiting until I got home, I decided to eat this one in the shop, so sorry if the photos aren't up to snuff. (These were taken with my cellphone inside the Dunkin.)
Wow, is this thing orange or what? They did NOT skimp on the food coloring for this one. This icing is really vibrant, which is eye catching, but how much food dye is in this stuff? It isn't even pumpkin flavored. This is the same classic sugar-icing they've always used, just dyed orange and with a white drizzle on top. There are a few graham cracker crumbs scattered about, but they're pretty sparse and flavorless. Let's face it, this thing looks nothing like the pictures from the promos.
I picked it up and took a bite....no filling. Just plain doughnut and sugary icing. It wasn't bad, but where's the pumpkin cheesecake? I took another bite, still no filling. WTF? Okay, I was a little frustrated at that point because I really wanted to get a nice clean bite photo with filling, and my doughnut was already getting bitten up. I looked for the icing injection area, that little hole on the doughnut where the icing was inserted, and took a bite there....STILL NO FILLING. What is this?! Witchcraft?
After another addition bite I finally found a little reservation of this cheesecake stuff, and it was an utter disappointment. This flavoring is very heavily spiced, which sounds like it should be awesome, but it wasn't. This stuff tasted like a Bath and Body Works fall candle. Heavily spiced, a little perfume-y, and slightly tangy trying to mimic cheese cake filling. If this were a scent, it'd be awesome. (I'm pretty sure there are pumpkin cheesecake candles out there they smell exactly like this doughnut filling tastes already.) As a flavor? This was pretty bad.
I was actually happy that I got so little filling, because the doughnut honestly tasted a lot better without it. That creamy whipped filling stuff was just too artificial and perfume-like. I think Nick from On Second Scoop felt that same way when he tried it. This filling is just...nasty.
On a Pumpkin Scale of 1-5 (5 being the most pumpkin-y) I’d give this a 0. The filling does have SOME pumpkin spiced flavoring, but it's more candle-like than a real slice of cheesecake, and I felt like I was eating a seasonal chapstick more than a doughnut. The limited amount of filling was a blessing in disguise.

  1. Maria! You poor thing! Really! I sympathize with you!
After reading the lines about the overspiced and soapy tasting cheesecandle filling i immediately had the taste in my mouth (and still have...). I once had a similar treat which gave me the excactly the same experience you had with this squarenut (yeah, for me doughnuts are round and have a hole. ;))
It's an awful experience, especially when awaiting somethings sweet xD

Thanks again for the review! :)

  2. Thank you for saving us all the disappointment! I find Dunkin Donuts to be really hit or miss recently with their donuts; some have a nice amount of filling, while others hardly have any at all. If I'm going to spend the calories on a donut I want to be guaranteed consistency and great taste!

    1. I agree, they are fun and I always give their new flavors a chance, but this is not the first time I've had a doughnut with barely any filling. Even though this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, and I was saved from eating more of this stuff, I still feel a little ripped off. I mean, I paid for filling. Where is it? (Krispy Kreme is still my preferred doughnut chain because they are way more consistent.)

  3. I think there was no filling, maybe whoever worked there forgot to fill it.

    1. There was some in the very end, you can kind of see it in the bite shot above, it's a creamy custard color.

  4. Mine was overflowing with so much filling I made a mess. Strange stuff.
