I still have a few Eastery-y products to review, so I might as well knock them out now while everything is still available (and likely on clearance.)
First up, this Blueberry Waffle Cotton Candy I picked up at Target!
Immediately, this smells like breakfast, but not blueberry waffles, more like Blueberry Morning Breakfast cereal mixed with granola. It's very sweet, thanks to the cotton candy, but the main aroma, after sugar, is real blueberry with a hint of oat-iness. Actually it's making me think of blueberry instant oatmeal a bit, but with a lot of extra sweetness.
Taking a bite, the cotton candy is light, fluffy, and there is a healthy amount of authentic blueberry flavoring, but those mix ins just fall right out. Getting the full "waffle" experience is next to impossible.
As you tear off tufts of cotton candy the mix-ins just fall right to the bottom of the tub, so I thought I would scoop them up and try them on their own. After all, mix ins are usually the best part.
However, in this product, they actually end up being the weakest link. The waffle bits are much harder than I expected. Instead of light and crispy, like crushed waffle cones, these are some hard, dental-work-hating, nuggets of...something. The best thing I can liken them to texture-wise is very undercooked rice or pasta. Or maybe very over cooked granola. They're really hard and lack sweetness or any flavoring on their own. The blueberry fragments are really hard too, although they do offer a slight flavor. And there are a few soft, chewy, blueberry bits mixed in there as well, but they're few and far between.
The dried fruit mix-ins are my favorite of the bunch. I really like the added chewy texture mixed with the melt-in-your-mouth cotton candy, but the waffle bits are just not that good.
There are a lot of things to like about this product, it's organic, it's women-owned, it's dye-free, it's veteran owned, and the blueberry cotton candy is pretty yummy, but those mix-ins, man. They just killed this for me.
While I liked the overall blueberry flavoring, and the cotton candy itself, I don't think that would be enough to make me buy this again, at least not with these same mix-ins as-is. But it's not a completely bad product, in fact, it inspired me to add dried fruit into my next cotton candy snacking experience. Have you tried this?
