Another attempt to improve upon perfection. While I'm a big fan of the Reese's cups with Reese's Pieces inside of them, I haven't liked or repurchased any of the other versions I've reviewed on the blog. I found them to be novel, but their execution managed to make Reese's worse, not better. But I'm all for giving new things a chance, so today I have Chocolate Lava and Caramel Big Cups.
Of the two, I'm most looking forward to the Chocolate Lava. What kind of consistency will it have? Thick and fudgy? Syrupy?
I was originally going to skip the Caramel cup all together, because it sounds way too sweet, but it was right there on the shelf so I figured, why not?
First up, Caramel.
Right away, as soon as I picked up the package, I could feel that these cups were denser than usual. That caramel adds a good amount of heft.Opened, it looks like the cups have gotten either exposed to heat, of the liquid in the caramel caused some sugar crystals to form on the chocolate's surface. It's not expired, so I'm still going to eat it.
Taking a bite, I like the chewy texture of the soft caramel, but that's really the only positive. You have the flavors of a normal Reese's Cup, and a really sugary sweet caramel. I normally love caramel, but this needs some kind of variation. If it had a sprinkle of salt or maybe even chopped peanuts, that would be an improvement. (And I normally hate chopped peanuts.) As-is, this is a dense sugar bomb. I could see sugar addicts loving this one, and kids, but for me this is another dud.
Next up, the one I was waiting for, Chocolate Lava.
Taking a bite, I'm immediately disappointed. This is a layer of chocolate syrup. Similar to a squeeze bottle of Hershey's.It's messy, it's runny, and it has a canned chocolate flavoring. I was kind of hoping for something right and fudgy, like Reisen's, but this is straight syrup. Flavor-wise, it' not a bad combination. I like the darker chocolate notes you get from the syrup, but you have to eat this cup in one bite or things get messy fast. Any flavor pay off isn't worth the clean-up.
Safe to say, neither of these flavors won me over. They're a fun novelty, but I wouldn't repurchase either for my own snacking. Have you tried either of these? And if so, do you think they're worthy of sticking around?
They're both not great because they add sweetness without any real textural interest. That said, I do like the sugar cookie ones out for Xmas this year. Have you tried those yet?
ReplyDeleteI haven't, but it makes me hopeful to hear you enjoyed it. I'll definitely have to check it out.
