Halloween is the only time of year where I eat Burger King. It may be my least favorite fast food option, but I fully support their commitment to strangely colorful burgers.
I've already had:
The HA1loween Burger, which had a black-bun infused with A1 sauce.
The Nightmare King - a monstrous combination of a beef patty, chicken patty, and bacon topped with a green bun
The Ghost Pepper Whopper - infused with ghost peppers, topped with a bright orange bun
So we've had black, green, orange and now, PURPLE!
For 2024 we have the Wednesday Whopper featuring a purple bun, colored by purple potatoes, alongside Thing's Rings (re-packaged onion rings), Gomez's Churro Fries (with a chocolate dipping sauce), and Morticia's Kooky Chocolate Shake to wash it down.
I popped into the Burger King drive through and picked up a medium Wednesday Burger meal, and an order of churro fries. I purposefully skipped the shake, I didn't feel like it was unique enough to waste the calories on.(I guess "death by chocolate" might be trademarked?) However, I DID intend to get the onion rings. I was mildly surprised when there were fries in my bag instead. I say "mildly" because the person running the drive through window at the time was very high. I know this because they said, "I'm so high right now," and had me repeat my order several times. It was really annoying, but I didn't want to go back and deal with the switch up. On the receipt that charged me for fries, so it is what it is. (I've eaten Wendy's 8+ times this month to get the Halloween toys, and drive-through employee was an absolute delight and the process was super smooth.)So, no onion rings for me.
The sandwich is a standard Whopper, so it's a beef burger patty with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, pickles, swiss cheese, ketchup and mayo, all on a purple bun. After having eaten Wendy's a LOT this month, the Whopper was a welcome change of pace. They were really generous with the pickles, the tomatoes were actually ripe with a lovely firm texture, and the sauce-to-topping ratio was well balanced. It was actually the best Whopper I've ever had. Other than the purple bun, which tasted like a normal bun, there's nothing else limited edition about it. Still, it was a good burger, very satisfying. 9/10
Churro fries tasted a little dry and overcooked, kind of like the churros that were once in the Costco food court. You can't go wrong with cinnamon sugar, which is always delicious, but the dry base did leave something to be desired. I opened up the chocolate sauce to see if that would help, and it was basically a non-branded form of Hershey's syrup, A bit stringy and messy for dipping, but it did help with the dryness of the churro dough. 5/10
Overall, this was a fun seasonal collaboration, but these are mostly year-round flavors in pretty packaging. I'm glad I got it, and hope they continue the tradition next year, but I'd like to see more creativity.
