Aldi is Snatching Oreo's Wig - Latte Crème Cookies

I hope you like cookies, because I have a LOT of cookies.

 

There are currently 12 different flavors of cookies in my stash, which is strange, because I always say I don't like store bought cookies. After this I might have to change my tune.

 

Why do I keep buying them? It's the blog's fault. There was this unspoken competition amongst junk food bloggers years ago to see who would announce new Oreo flavors, or be the first to find them on the shelves or to review them. And even though cookie posts are no where near my most popular, my brain feels compelled to buy flavored cookies. Even off-brand ones. My blogger-brain is like, "This is what the people want." But really, looking at my views, you guys would rather read about various forms of octopus and really basic Aldi products.   

 

Enough rambling, I have a lot of cookies to eat, and Coffee is a good place to start. Let's check out this knock off coffee Oreo from Aldi.

Aldi shoppers like myself must have noticed by now that Benton's, the Aldi "Oreo," has really stepped up their game. They're releasing a new flavor every month, sometimes two, and most of the time they don't even advertise it. I'm not sure about Aldi locations near you, but pretty much as soon as you see it in an ad, it's already gone, so it's probably for the best.  

When opened, they smell chocolatey with a healthy amount of sweet, cream-heavy, coffee. Kind of like a coffee ice cream with Oreo cookie pieces, (which sounds delicious) let's hope they taste the same way. 

At a glance, these seem double stuffed, but there is no mention of that on the package. Then again Oreo Thins might have messed up my crème to cookie ratio identification. I feel like this is a lot, but maybe it's normal. 

Cookie on it's own: Fairly generic, crispy, chocolate cookie. Not as delicious as Oreo's, but it's pretty good, and it has absorbed some coffee flavoring from being in contact with the filling which is really nice. It's not overly sweet, and coffee and chocolate are always a great combination, so this isn't a mind shattering realization or new territory, but it is yummy and I like it a lot more than I thought I would.  

The filling is stiffer than Oreo's, and it clings to the cookie making it impossible to remove cleanly. I am surprised that it's sweet, creamy, and not as coffee-like as the cookie portion was. Did the cookie suck the coffee-ness out of the filling? I don't think the cookie itself is actually coffee flavored...is it?  If you see people drinking near-white cups of "coffee," that is what this filling tastes like. There's a hint of coffee, but it's mostly sweet cream. Still yummy, but not as strong as I thought it would be. 

Combined, it's pretty darn good. You get darker chocolate notes, crispy cookie, very sweet cream, and a pleasant coffee aftertaste. Everything compliments one another, and they taste great with a glass of milk, or a cup of coffee. 

It's been years since I have had a normal coffee Oreo, so I can't confidently compare the two, but I will confidently declare this to be a good grocery store cookie.  

Kudos, Aldi. You made a good cookie, the only problem is...will we ever see it again?
