Red Curry Noodle Soup - Aldi

Red Curry Noodle Soup - Aldi
Last week was intense! Between my 9-5 graphic design day job, house hunting, being a guest artist at a local school, teaching 4-art lessons there (kindergarten, 1st, 3rd & 6th), attending a wedding, and running my Etsy shop...I barely had any time to sleep, let alone blog. On the bright side, I may have finally found a new place to live! (Fingers crossed! Please send me all your good house-buying vibes!)
I have a few hours of free time tonight, so I'm going to type up as many reviews as I can and schedule them to post this week. No more missed days!!
It's been really rainy and gloomy here in NJ, since fall has hit us like a ton of bricks, so I have some warm and soothing soup for today's #meatlessmonday desk lunch.

What I Had for Dinner Tonight

One of my aunts gave me a HUGE zucchini from her garden last week, and I finally used up the last of it to make giant Panko and Parmesan-crusted zucchini coins. Then I used those coins, and some brioche buns from Aldi, to make zucchini-Parm sandwiches.

Next time I'll marinate the zucchini overnight in some herb infused olive oil or something to give it a bit more flavor, but overall, this was pretty darn good and a nice change from my usual #meatlessmonday salad dinners.

Veggi Manchow - India Bazaar

Veggi Manchow - India Bazaar
A long overdue Meatless Monday post. I bought this right before Easter at the India Bazaar, and I picked it up for a few reasons.
  1. It's called Manchow, and I find that really funny, but it's a real soup
  2. It's veggie-based, and I'm always looking for easy veggie meals.
  3. It's Manchester United Football Team themed!
I don't follow sports, but I love movies, and whenever I see Manchester United, I think of the Soccer Hooligans from Eurotrip, which is a raunchy, but extremely underappreciated film that everyone (over the age of 18) should see at least once. Also, fun fact, when I was traveling through Eastern Europe I saw a sign for Bratislava and nearly jumped off the bus to take a photo.

Before I go off on a tangent about my love for Eurotrip, let's cook up some cup noodles!

Appetitos Avocado Fries - Aldi

Appetitos Avocado Fries - Aldi
Avocado slices. Covered in breading and served with ranch dipping sauce. You're not fooling anyone Appetitos. Just because it's avocado doesn't mean this is healthier than breaded anything else...but I am curious as to how this will work out.

Taking vegetables and turning them into "fries" isn't a new concept, companies and restaurant chains have been doing this with green beans for years, but avocado slices? They're so soft and creamy. Can they even hold their shape for dipping? Time to investigate!

Bolthouse Farms Orange + Carrot Juice - Aldi

Bolthouse Farms Orange + Carrot Juice - Aldi
I don't have the best eating habits. (Shocking, I know.) I eat frozen pizza 3-4 times a week and lately the only way I've been getting fruit into my diet is when I add it to waffle batter on the weekends. My typical routine is crazy and there's no signs of it letting up any time soon, so squeezing vitamins, fruits and veggies into my diet any way I can is probably a good idea. The only catch is, it's gotta taste good.

Noosa Strawberry Rhubarb Greek Yogurt - Target: Marlton, NJ

Noosa Strawberry Rhubarb Greek Yogurt - Target: Marlton, NJ
Rhubarb! Oh man, this is a flavor I don't see too often, but I have no idea why. I absolutely love it! Why aren't there more strawberry rhubarb things in the foodie world? I've had Noosa yogurts before, so I have really high hopes for this one!

First here's a little rundown on Rhubarb since it's something a lot of people aren't familiar with it.

Beer Brat BBQ Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJAs s

As seen on my Instagram Account
Beer Brat BBQ Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ
In 2014, several Aldi-exclusive brands released pizzas with some interesting flavors, like Chicken Club, Gyro, Tandoori, and Cuban. I had a lot of fun buying and trying them all, and while none of them were inedible, I can't say they were all enjoyable either. The Chicken club was one of the richest, cheesiest, and crispiest freezer pizzas I have ever had, the others? Well, they were fun concepts, but none worked nearly as well as the Chicken Club.

Even though I wasn't wowed by the last few Aldi pizzas I've reviewed, I still wanted to give this Beer Brat version a try. It's so different from the others, and it's  only specialty take-and-bake pizza they currently offer. (Although more might be on the way soon.) Let's see if this pizza was worth the purchase.

The box for this pizza was WAY too big for my photo set up, which is meant for tiny foods, so this photo was taken with my cellphone in the Aldi freezer case.

Unlike the other Aldi pizzas I've reviewed, this one is from their Take & Bake line, so it's kept in the refrigerated section instead of the freezer, and it's packaged similarly to a take-out pizza. The rest of the pizzas in this line are 16", while this one is only 14, so it's a bit smaller than usual, and it's a bit more expensive. Even with the price tag padded a little bit, it was still cheaper than a delivery pizza of the same size with the same amount of toppings. As far as the design goes, I like the simple brown cardboard and black text, and it does a good job of looking nice while staying relatively cheap. It isn't as gorgeous as other full color pizza boxes, but it gets the job done just fine.

I removed the shrink plastic from the refrigerated pizza, preheated the oven, and baked it until the crust started the brown and the cheese bubbled. (Just like you would with any other frozen/refrigerated pizza.) When it was done, it smelled sweet, like BBQ sauce and caramelized onions. The aroma was much sweeter than I originally thought it'd be, and I couldn't detect anything beer-y about it.

I sliced it up, and took a bite. I gotta say, I can't taste any beer in this at all. Part of me is relieved, I hate beer, but that does seem like false advertizing. The box said that this was covered with a "Beer BBQ sauce," but it tastes like Kraft Honey BBQ to me. It's really sweet, a little onion-y, and tomato-y. It's not bad at all, it's just really sweet. As for the rest of the pizza, the caramelized peppers and onions added a different texture, but they were really sweet as well, and the cheese blend was pretty mild. The strongest flavoring, other than the sauce, were the thick slices of bratwurst which added a slightly spicy and meaty flavor.

It's been a long time since I've eaten Bratwurst, I think I had some during a Christmas party in 2013, so I don't really have a vivid brat-based memory to compare this to, but to me, these slices taste like a better version of the sausage crumbles that delivery pizza usually comes with. These slices were moist, meaty, and they helped to offset the sweetness just a bit. (Moist and meaty... that was awful to type.)

I don't think I would buy this pizza again, it was just too sweet for me, it needs something strong to cut through all that sweetness, maybe some spicy peppers? Then again, that's my personal preference. If you enjoy the sweet BBQ sauce based pizzas from Papa John's, you'll love this one. This was better than the last three Papa John's pizzas I've tried, but it was just too sweet for me to want to repurchase.

Papa Johns better step-up their game, you're getting beaten by a no-frills grocery store brand.

Instant Corn Potage Soup - H-Mart: Cherry Hill, NJ

Instant Corn Potage Soup - H-Mart: Cherry Hill, NJ
I woke up this morning, looked outside my window, and everything was covered in snow. We only got two inches, and I know many of you get a LOT more snow in your area and my piddly little amount is nothing to complain about, but I just hate winter. I'm a total Scrooge about the holidays and I hate being cold. Snow is fun when you're a little kid. You sometimes get out of school, you have snowball fights, build forts, it's magical and whimsical and fun. Once you have your own car, and your college or job won't close unless it's the end of times, and even then you're lucky if you get a 2-hour delay, snow looses a lot of it's appeal.

Since it's cold and snowy, what better way to warm up than with a bowl of soup?

Veggie Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ

Veggie Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ
Aldi stepped up their pizza game in 2014! There's been a new flavor combination advertized in every circular!  Sadly, I haven't tried every single one, but I have reviewed the Chicken Club, Gyro, BBQ Chicken, and Tandoori Pizzas. (Plus, they just showed a Cuban style pizza in this week's ad I'm really excited for.) Some were better than others, but I haven't regretted a purchase yet, and the prices can't be beat. (I still say Aldi's Gyro pizza was leaps and bounds better than Papa John's attempt at a Greek pizza.)

Compared to the other pizzas I've reviewed, veggie may seem a bit bland, but it's one of my favorites, so I had to give it a try.

Pumpkin Squash Ravioli - Target: Cherry Hill, NJ

Pumpkin Squash Ravioli - Target: Cherry Hill, NJ
I guess this flavor is getting pretty popular, because this will be the fourth pumpkin themed ravioli I've reviewed in the last three years. To be fair, I think this flavor is available year round, and not a seasonal product like the others, but what better time to give this a try than October?

Tandoori Vegetable Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ

Tandoori Vegetable Pizza - Aldi: Cherry Hill, NJ
Apparently my last post, about the art for the returning monster cereal boxes, marked my 666th post on this site. (Spooky. It happened organically, but it totally works and I'm running with it.) I started Sometimes Foodie on Tumblr, which I still update daily, but still have less than 300 reviews that haven't been transferred over to blogger. Between both sites, I am quickly approaching 1000 reviews total! To celebrate, I'll be posting another give away contest later this week. It's been a while since I've ran one, so it's long over due and it should be a lot of fun. I'll keep you all posted.

In the meantime, check out this Tandoori pizza from Aldi!
