I bought this a LONG time ago, and I am 100% sure it's "expired," but I'm going to eat it anyway. I like to live dangerously.

Pocky: Salted Caramel vs Blond Chocolat

Tempted By The Fruit of a Pocky! (Grape & Mango Pocky?)
(Made it in! Just before Midnight EST!) I am 100% sure I've used this song lyric as a title before, but this was too perfect to pass up. I mean, this is "Squeeze" Pocky, and it's fruit flavored! It's a match made in pop-culture-foodie heaven. (Or Dad-joke level hell, depending on your sense of humor.)
When did I buy these? I have no idea. My foodie backlog is way out of control. I've joked about it in the past but due to my failure as a blogger in 2017, it overflowed big time. I'm just going to write this off as a foodie gift from my past self and leave it at that. (Yay!)
It might be hard to tell in photos, but these are half sized boxes that contain mini Pocky sticks. For something so small, the packaging sure is stylish! The cardboard boxes have a high gloss finish, beautiful food imagery, and a fairly luxe feel. They even photographed beautifully! So far, this packaging as me falling in love with Pocky all over again, but what about the flavors?
Thanks to the context clues on the packaging, I'm guessing these chocolate coated bread sticks are flavored with 70% real fruit, which wounds great...if these were gummies, but they're chocolate coated bread sticks. That being the case, mango was more of a safe bet for me, since I've had a decent amount of mango flavored chocolates from Japan, but grape flavored chocolate? I sense a red flag...

Brazilian Orange Pocky - H-Mart
Unlike my recent posts, this isn't a food-hoard item, it's actually brand new (well, new to me), and I picked it up at H-mart the other day. To combat further food hoarding, I am going to try and review new products as I get them, while simultaneously digging through my food stash to finish hidden treasures. (I consider them gifts from past-me. I'm so thoughtful.)
Orange Pocky has been around for a while, and it's come in a few variations, like chocolate sticks, fruit pulp mixed into the chocolate coating, or fancy chocolate swirls, but they never really piqued my interest. I'll eat orange flavors sweets when they're mixed in with other fruity flavors, like Skittles, Starbursts, and Sour Patch Kids, but I would never buy a bag of just orange flavored candy completely on it's own. That just sounded...boring.
It seems like orange sweets are much more popular overseas in the UK and Europe, but here in the states, it's rarely the main attraction. Maybe we're missing out on something, and that's a pretty awesome looking Toucan... That's all it took. Into my cart it went!

Fruity Pocky - Amazon
Fruity Pocky - Amazon
I leave for the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York TOMORROW! Am I prepared? Well...
Professional food blogger business cards? Check! My fancy new Media Kit (which took me all night to finish)? Check! Clothes and luggage packed? ....kind of? Food reviews queue up for YouTube and the blog? . . . .
I still have a LOT to do before I leave, but I'm doing my best to knock all of that out today, plus this way I can take care of a few more products in my food stash. Win win! For today's post I have some fancy Pocky I bought online. I usually refrain from buying food stuff on Amazon because it never arrives in one piece. Even though the seller packaged these with lots of bubble wrap and FRAGILE stickers...the strawberry box is still a little worse for wear. But hey, even if it's in pieces it'd still edible! Let's see if these fancy foreign Pocky taste any different than the Japanese versions.

Cookies & Cream Pocky vs. White Cookie Pepero
It's a battle of the brands! Korea's favorite, Pepero, versus Glico's Taiwanese Pocky! (This box came from Taiwan, not Japan, so it could differ slightly from the typical Japanese Pocky, so I wanted to be sure I pointed that out before we got started.)
Not only is this a handy way to get through two products from my stash at the same time, but it'll be interesting to see the difference between these two popular chocolate-coated snacks sticks. They look similar, and they're the same flavor, but trust me, they're very different. Which brand shall be victorious?
I'll be comparing them in three rounds, packaging, taste, and value for your money. Best out of three, wins!

Candyology101 Episode 18: Japanese Sweets
On today's episode of Candyology101, Cybele and I discuss three hugely popular Japanese candies, Pocky, Kasugai gummies, and Hi-Chew! All three of these sweets are becoming easier to find in American grocery stores, so hopefully everyone out there listening can easily find and try these delicious goodies for yourselves.
We have a little bit of history behind each company, Cybele and I share our favorite flavors, and we even play a little game where Cybele lists a (possibly) made-up Japanese sweet and I need to guess if it's real or not! Join us as we discuss the good, the bad, and the tomato-y!
Have you been liking Candyology101 so far?
Please head on over to itunes and give us a little review to let us know how we're doing.

Berry Carnival Pocky - Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ
It's snowing again, and instead of digging out my car like a responsible adult, I'm going to stay inside and review a tropical pack of Pocky featuring a toucan. (I think I've got this life thing figured out.)

Otona No Miruku Pocky - Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ
The box clearly shows that this chocolate Pocky has something to do with milk, but I am not entirely sure what this flavor is and how milk comes into play. I assumed this was milk chocolate flavored because the label on the back of the packaging says " Otona Milk Choco," but I looked this box up online and I found two different explanations. One link claims that this is "adult milk" flavored Pocky, which is only mildly horrifying, and another says that this is "rich milk pie" flavored. Now, neither option sounds all that appealing, what is a milk pie anyway? And what exactly makes milk "adult?" Welp, there's no going back now. I guess we'll find out when I open the box.

Coffee and Almond Chocolate Crush Pocky - Philadelphia's Chinatown, PA
It's been a while since I've reviewed Pocky, I think the last time was back in September when I found that Rare Cheesecake flavor in Chinatown, but I haven't seen any new flavors in my area. I'm not sure if they just aren't being imported like they used to, or if there haven't been that many new flavors released in Asia (which I doubt), but I got my hands on two new boxes to review.
Let's start with this coffee and chocolate Almond Crush Pocky!

Rare Cheesecake Pocky - ??? : Chinatown, Philadelphia, PA
Rare Cheesecake Pocky - ??? : Chinatown, Philadelphia, PA
It's been a while since I have reviewed Pocky, so here is a snazzy flavor new flavor that was released this summer.
What is "Rare Cheesecake?" Some kind of fancy hard to find cheese? Nope, it's actually a no-bake cheesecake, so the "rare" refers to being uncooked like a rare steak. We have no-bake cheesecakes here in the states as well, but the ones served in Asian have a very different taste. Cake may vary, because all bakers make everything a little differently, but rare cheesecakes can taste very, well, cheesy. In America we tend to prefer a standard cream cheese flavoring for the base but Asian cheesecakes can occasionally have a truly cheesy taste with strong lemon flavoring. Again, it varies from bake shop to bake shop, but you might get something that tastes completely different from the standard, American, cheesecake.
On to the review...

Jumbo Yubari Melon Pocky - Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ
Jumbo Yubari Melon Pocky - Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ
To make up for missing yesterday’s post, here is some JUMBO Yubari Melon Pocky!
The packaging is like any other box of Pocky, just bigger. Since Yubari melon is a variation of cantaloupe, the design features split melons and fruity colors. The green and orange gradient mimics the rind of a cantaloupe, and the individual wrappers have a crosshatched pattern just like the melon’s skin. While the packaging is bright and eye catching, it’s not the best Pocky design I have ever seen.

Mint Pocky - Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ
Mint Pocky - Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ
'Tis the season for all things minty.
Tonight my boyfriend and I are seeing a screening of the Puella Magi Modaka Magica movies, and since he likes minty things AND his favorite character is Kyoko, I am bringing this Mint Pocky along on our date. (Of course I have to sample it AND review it first!)
The box is adorable! It’s covered in silver text, mint leaves, and teal stripes. All of the colors are cool-toned, which really plays up the mint theme. Pocky packaging has never let me down. The boxes are always well designed and thought out.

Pocky: From The Screen to My Stomach
The popularity of Asian culture in America is nothing new, but the sudden popularity and influx of their snack foods is.
As of right now you can find popular Asian snack foods at local chain grocery stores like Wegman’s, as well as entertainment stores like FYE. Why have these treats become so popular and readily available? Is it simply because they taste good? Or, is this an attempt to squeeze even more money out of anime and manga fans eager to try the same snacks their favorite characters enjoy?
I decided to investigate. I grabbed several flavors of Pocky, one of the most common and popular treats seen in manga and anime, to see if it is as delicious as characters make it seem.

Strawberry Heart Shaped Pocky,Chinatown PA
Strawberry Heart Shaped Pocky,Chinatown PA
Now I have had Strawberry Pocky before, but this is different. I have been hunting for this heart shaped one ever since I saw it on the net!
Normal Strawberry Pocky has a basic biscuit stick and a pale pink strawberry-flavored confectionery coating. This one is similar, it had a heart shaped basic biscuit stick but the strawberry coating is darker and has deep red flecks.
