Macro-ron - Lidl Brownie Macaron Sandwich

Took a bit of a break, but I'm back, baby.

Macarons are a lot of work. They're made with (expensive) almond flour, they need to be piped in uniform puddles, then you need to let them rest before tapping the tray on the counter to create the perfect "foot," all before baking and assembling. I sadly don't have the time, or the budget, to perfect a macaron in my kitchen. (Although I would love to one day.) So, for now, I buy them. Even when they come from Lidl. they still feel like a luxurious treat.

Lately, I've noticed that macarons are getting Big-Mac-ified. Meaning, they are getting bigger, and more outrageous. Like those Milkshakes that were all the rage a few years ago. The ones that were topped with full-sized separate desserts and have glass vessels covered in chocolate. It's a spectacle more than anything else. (I mean, how are you supposed to eat the chocolate off the glass? It's such a waste.) It appears to be Macaron's turn. I've seen huge ones stuffed with ice cream and fillings, like ice cream sandwiches, or giant cake-sized ones meant to be cut up and served at parties. Then there's this smaller scale one I saw at Lidl.

It's a macaron, filled with brownie chunks, vanilla bean crème, and salted caramel. In theory, it all sounds great, but will it be too much?

Rice Cakes: Food or Packing Material? - Two Seasonal Lidl Flavors

Did anyone else go through a rice cake phase in the late 90's to early 2000's? I remember eating chocolate flavored ones with mini chocolate chips all the time. I also remember eating them with little pods of apple cinnamon flavored peanut butter. After searching online for ages, I found it! It was Jif Smooth Sensations in Apple Cinnamon. Specifically the sample versions seen in this photo! My mom got a bunch of free samples but due to peanut allergies, she couldn't give them away to kids, so we were drowning in these things at home. (According to the 1999 commercial, I guess it was a fully realized product in jars?)

Were rice cakes a universally popular snack in the late 90's? Or was this a personal quirk?

Anyway, Lidl released some seasonal rice cakes in their fall line up and I thought, why not?

Feeling Salty? - Salted Caramel Brownie Oreos

Salted Caramel Brownie Oreos - Target

During quarantine, I made countless batches of salted chocolate chip cookies, and got into the habit of adding crushed up potato chips to them as well. So when I saw that Oreo was getting in on the trend, by salting their classic cookie, I had to taste the results for myself.

Which Slight Twist on a Classic is Superior?

Salted Caramel MilkyWay vs Peanut Brownie Snickers

Two classic candy bars slightly change things up, which is superior? The one that added salt, or the one that changed their nougat to "brownie?"

New Oreo Thin Flavors: Coconut & Salted Caramel

Coconut & Salted Caramel Oreo Thins- Walmart
It's been a minute since my last post, and since then my household has gained: a chalkboard wall, an 18" deep trench around the pool, a friendly baby chinchilla, and a thriving cherry tomato plant. I've also (unfortunately) discovered and destroyed a bunch of poison ivy in the yard (after kneeling in it, oops.), and I've managed to dismantle a small chunk of my cardboard-castle-filled living room. Who knew I had so much stuff?! (And so few chinchillas.)
So yeah, it's been quite the adventure, but it's a fun adventure, so let's celebrate some slim victories with some slim cookies!

7 Different Dark Chocolate Aldi Chocolate Bars!

Choceur 70% Dark Chocolate Collection  - Aldi
Did you know that Aldi and Trader Joe's are related? YUP! They're sister companies owned by the same German family. For the most part, each store releases their own items catering to different niche markets and trending flavors, but once in a while both stores will release the same product, with different packaging and price points. (Like these pumpkin scone cookies I compared and reviewed.)

Years ago, I picked up THIS beautiful dark chocolate passport gift item from Trader Joe's, and I completely lost it over the gorgeous packaging. Flash forward to now, when I see Aldi trying to release their own dark chocolate themed gift pack for the holidays. It's no-where near as cute as the Trader Joe's one, but this has something the Trader Joe's version lacked. Variety.

The Trader Joe's bars were all dark chocolates from various locations around the world, but they were just dark chocolate. No toppings, not mix ins, no nothing. They were pretty, but by the third bar I was bored and my palette was exhausted. I don't think I ever finished reviewing the box set, mainly because...my tongue just didn't care. I was craving some flavor, and (hopefully) Aldi will deliver.

Insta-Review: Ben & Jerry's New Belgium Salted Caramel Brown-ie Ale

I keep meaning to write up a formal review for this ice cream but I don't think that's ever going to happen, so this will have to do.

Maybe my "adult taste-buds" still haven't come in yet or something, because I'm nearly 30 years old and I still hate beer. I try all the new beers my friends bring over, everything from peanut butter to creme brûlée brew, and nothing has won me over yet. I take a sip, then I react like those babies on YouTube trying a lemon for the first time. Once at a BBQ I even spat it out right into the grass! Not my classiest moment, but I still gave that beer a try.

I think it's safe to say I'm a beer-hater, but when I saw all the rave reviews this boozy flavor of Ben & Jerry's was getting, I decided to give it the benefit of a doubt. (Plus my boyfriend likes beer, and brownies, so I figured it wouldn't go to waste if I ended up hating it.)

The beer-part of this ice cream IS the actual ice cream. This off-white creamy base is flavored like Belgium brown ale, and then there are caramel swirls and bits of brownie blended in. I'm totally on board with the caramel and brownie, but that ale-base had me pretty nervous. It makes up the majority of this little container, and if I hate beer then that could be a problem for me and my baby-taste-buds.

I took a bite, and surprisingly, it's pretty good! The ice cream has this salty, yeasty flavoring to it, mixed with vanilla, and I know it's meant to mimic a brown ale, but in my mind it kind of tastes like a soft South Philly pretzel! When you mix that slightly salty and savory base with sweet caramel and little chunks of brownie the end result is pretty darn good! As a non-beer lover, I think of this is a salted chocolate pretzel ice cream, and I really dig it! If any of you are the kind of person who dips their french fries in a Wendy's Frosty, this is the ice cream for you. It's salty, kind of savory, but sweet all at the same time.

I baked up some brownies and served a big scoop of this stuff to my boyfriend and he really enjoyed it. (But he's a sucker for a warm chewy brownie.)

I bought this thinking that it was going to be a foodie gift for him, but it ended up being something I really enjoyed too! (I might even like it more than him!) I'm glad I got it, and I might even buy it again. Does Ben & Jerry's make beer? If so, I might have to give that a try.

Dark Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Salted Caramels - Trader Joe's

Dark Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Salted Caramels - Trader Joe's
More pumpkin? But it's winter! Yup, like always, I have a bit of pumpkin overhang from the fall season. To work my way through all that stuff, while still posting seasonally appropriate reviews, I'll be posting off-season items once a week as a Throw Back Thursday kind of thing. I thought that would be a fun way to let me work through my stash of food products while staying relevant. So here's my first throw back to fall, some Pumpkin Spiced Caramels from Trader Joe's.

Wegman’s Premium Ice Cream - Wegman’s : Cherry Hill, NJ

Wegman’s Premium Ice Cream - Wegman’s : Cherry Hill, NJ
Another summer themed treat. (I’m going to the boardwalk this Saturday!)
Previously reviewed:
I haven’t been disappointed by a Wegman’s ice cream yet, so let’s get right to the review…

Magnum Gold -Target : Cherry Hill, NJ

Magnum Gold -Target : Cherry Hill, NJ
I’m sure most of you have seen the televisions ads for this gold ice cream bar. The packaging says that it is a new flavor, but this ad was made in 2010, so maybe this is a second release. Anyway, I had to give this bar a try.
The packaging really plays up the ‘gold’ aspect. The font is gold, the bar is glowing with a gold aura, and the typical Magnum logo has been morphed into a vault. For a brand that tries to appear high end and sophisticated, this is pretty playful. I think the design works well and it definitely caught my eye.

Dove Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel - Target: Cherry Hill, NJ

Dove Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel - Target: Cherry Hill, NJ
I love Dove brand chocolate. Their chocolates have a smooth and silky mouth-feel. Lately, this brand has been expanding to include new flavors. (I tried their version of cookies and cream a while back and wasn’t impressed.) Let’s see if sea salt and caramel is any better.
The packaging is standard for Dove. It’s a plastic bag which contains individual chocolates wrapped in foil. If you aren’t familiar with Dove, each one of the candies has a little message inside the wrapper. I just ate one that says, “Daydreaming is free.” I like the novelty of messages inside my candy, like a fortune cookie, but these are kinda cheesy.

Stoli Salted Caramel Vodka - Liquor Store : Wildwood, NJ

Stoli Salted Caramel Vodka - Liquor Store : Wildwood, NJ
Another mini bottle I grabbed at the liquor store. This has been a big year for sea salt, and it seems like I am seeing salted caramel everywhere these days. I was wondering, would the flavor do well when mixed with drinks?

The bottle is a nice size and it is actually made with frosted glass, not plastic. I always love when bottles are made with glass, because they are usually really cute and I can reuse them in crafting project or when I make my own bath supplies.

When opened, it smells like a really good caramel. I can smell burnt sugar notes, and the alcohol makes it seem like a perfume!
