Italian Hoagie Potato Chips- The un-official flavor of NJ?

PrimoHoagies Italian Hoagie Potato Chips - CVS
When did CVS, a drug store, become such a lucrative epicenter for bizarre snackfoods?
These were on an end-cap next to the Herr's Orange Cream Balls and the Herr's Cotton Candy Balls. (It seems like Herr's is very into balls right now...) I decided to pass on the orange balls, for now, but I couldn't pass up a hoagie flavored chip.

What I Ate Today: Wildwood Boardwalk Edition

We've got deep fried Oreos, candy bars, pickles, cookie dough, Kool-Aid...you name it, they'll fry it.
I went to the Wildwoods for the day, to spend a little time with my family and take my dog, Jack Jack, to the dog beach, and I thought it'd be fun to do a little "Day in The Life" style post with all the stuff I ate down the shore. So here we go!

More Taffy! (James Salt Water Taffy from Wildwood, NJ)

James Salt Water Taffy - Wildwood, NJ
I have been having a REALLY hard time writing this week. I've edited tons of photos, and started writing several different reviews, but I can't stay focused enough to finish any of them. Thankfully it's the weekend (well nearly the weekend) and I am going to sit down and force myself to do it. Even if it means drinking some coffee. (Which I very very rarely do.)

This may not be a fully fleshed out review, but I thought it'd be fun to try some different flavors of Salt Water Taffy that I picked up during my last day trip to the shore.

Jersey Shore Food Post Teaser

I went to the Jersey shore yesterday and ate a TON of food. I’ll be writing up a big blog post about it, but here are some teaser photos to tide you over.

Money on Honey Wildflower Honey Caramels - Rastelli Market: Evesham Township, NJ

Money on Honey Wildflower Honey Caramels - Rastelli Market: Evesham Township, NJ
I'm sorry posting has been so sporadic lately, it'll get back to normal very soon. I only have two weeks left to prepare for my booth for Otakon's artist alley, so I'm sleeping even less than usual, and I look insane, but hopefully all this hard work will payoff. (If you want to read/see more of my art stuff, check out my art blog.)

Since I've been so focused on my print work, Sometimes Foodie has been a bit neglected, but I'm back! (With a fancy gold foil backdrop to boot!) Let's see what all the buzz is about with these Money on Honey caramels. (Oh so lame, but a honey post without any terrible bee references would be a total waste.)

Strawberry Balsamic Vinegar - Blue Moon: Collingswood, NJ

Strawberry Balsamic Vinegar - Blue Moon: Collingswood, NJ
Blue Moooon, you saw me standing alone, without a bottle in my hand, now I've got one of my own. Okay, enough of that. (I'm sorry, that was so lame. I've been listening to a lot of older music lately and I couldn't resist.)
Back to our regularly scheduled food blog!
Today I've got a little something from one of my favorite local shops, Blue Moon! I know there's a really popular beer company with the same name, but this is something completely different. (Plus I hate beer.) The Blue Moon I'm talking about is a cute little shop in Collingswood that sells fancy olive oils and balsamic vinegars.

Get ready for a rant and a story under the cut.

Caramel Filled Waffle - Gift

Caramel Filled Waffle - Gift
It's been a very, very long day, so I'm taking a break to treat myself with this little chocolate covered treat. This is going to be a pretty short review, since there's really no packaging, so let's just get right to it!

WMMR: Chuck Eats Fruit for the FIRST Time

This is a local radio show I listen to every day on my way to work, and I thought this segment was just hilarious. I mean, how do you go four decades without eating a strawberry? It just blows my mind!

I have met several adults like this who are extremely picky eaters and have been all their lives. Oddly enough, they were all men. I wonder if it's a genetic thing, maybe something is chemically different in their mouths/brains?

Anyway, watch a grown man eat fruit for the first time!

blk+ Black Lemonade - Wegman's: Cherry Hill, NJ

blk+ Black Lemonade - Wegman's: Cherry Hill, NJ
Two year ago, back when Sometimes Foodie was only on tumblr, I reviewed blk water. Visually, it's stunning, I mean...it's water, but it's black! How cool is that? (I was goth in high school, back then I would have bought this stuff by the case just for the goth-y street cred.) Other than being a dark color, it was just water. Sure, there was a slightly charcoal-like aftertaste, but there was nothing truly special about it, so I haven't repurchased it since.

I was walking around the grocery store a little while ago and I saw that blk was expanding their product line with some new flavored waters. Even though I wasn't wowed by the normal blk, I do love the concept behind this product line, so I thought I'd pick one of the flavors out and give it a review.

Pumpkin Cheesecake Doughnut - Krispy Kreme: Collingswood, NJ

Pumpkin Cheesecake Doughnut - Krispy Kreme: Collingswood, NJ
Welp, the wifi adapter on my main computer is kaput. It lasted over a year and I was really happy with it, but today, out of the blue, it wouldn't connect at all. I thought it might be loose, so I reached to remove it, and it felt like molten lava. I let it cool, then attempted to reconnect it, which worked, but it quickly started reheating and then the internet was gone once again. I already ordered a replacement, so in the meantime I'll be using my older computer that is directly connected to the internet for my reviews. So sorry if things look a little wonky, it's been a while since I've used this one and the monitor might need to be recalibrate.

Anyway, my mother decided to treat my sister and I to some doughnuts, so what better time to try this pumpkin-y limited edition doughnut?

Pomegranate & Pear Jelly Fruit Slices Part 3 - The Fudge Factory: Wildwood, NJ

Pomegranate & Pear Jelly Fruit Slices Part 3 - The Fudge Factory: Wildwood, NJ
Here's the last if my Jelly Fruit Slices! Check out the citrus flavors Here, and the exotic Chili Mango and Pineapples ones Here.
So far, the Chili Mango and Pink Grapefruit were the best of the bunch and I plan on buying more of them next season, but will either (or both) of these flavors make their way onto my re-buy list?  I guess we'll find out!

I don't think I ever blogged about it but, a few years ago, I was quite obsessed with Pomegranates. I'd buy pomegranate candies, juices, and anything else I could get my hands on. The last few years my fruity obsession has shifted to bananas, but I love the tangy flavoring of this ruby-red fruit. I've never seen this flavor offered in jellied-slice form, so I have high hopes for this candy.

The candy slice has a ruby-red rind with a tiny bit of the white candy pith-like coating separating the two layers.  The white portion for this flavor is no where near as thick as the one on the Grapefruit slices, but it's still visible, and the center is a extremely dark berry color. Just like the Pineapple slices, the candy doesn't have any distinctive scent.

I took a bite, and while the texture is the same as the rest of the fruit slices, this specific flavor is impressively rich and very different from any of the other slices I've reviewed. While this is way too sweet to ever be mistaken for a real pomegranate, the fruity flavoring for this candy is rich and berry-like, almost as if pomegranate juice was reduced into an insanely sugary syrup. There is a hint of some tangy and slightly acidic fruity flavoring towards the end, which is really enjoyable and slightly authentic, but I wouldn't say that this fruit slice really tasted like actual pomegranates. Even so, the richness of this candy did leave me wanting more, so I think this will be re-buy-worthy next summer.

Last, but not least, Pear!

The pear slice is a bit different from the others. The center "fruit" portion is a milky opaque color, so it really stands out from the rest of the candies in my bag. To be honest, I'm not sure if this flavor has a layer of white confection or not. I'd assume it does because all of the other flavors had it, but I can't really see it against the milky pear-flavored filling.

I might be crazy, but this flavor felt like it had a much softer bite than the others. Maybe whatever makes the candy opaque also makes it softer? A far as the flavoring goes, this was pretty intense. It started out with intense sweetness of the gritty sanding sugar coating, but once the white jellied candy hits your tongue it's rather tangy. To me the flavoring is like a mixture of Granny Smith apple and Goya Pear nectar. It's really sweet, there is some green-apple-like tartness, and throat burningly sweet pear-y aftertaste. Again, this doesn't taste like biting into a real pear, but as far as jellied fruit slices go, it was really different from everything else I purchased. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but I was actually pretty sad when I finished my two little pear slices. I might order one or two of these slices next summer, but I don't think I could see myself ever wanting a bag of this flavor exclusively.

Both of these flavors were really interesting and different, and while I enjoyed the variety, I may only buy 1-2 slices each next summer. I still feel like the Grapefruit and Chili Mango slices are definite re-buys, and I plan on getting a full bag of those next summer to share with friends and family. If you're ever in the Wildwood Area, stop by The Fudge Factory and check out their impressive fruit slice variety. Check out the photo above to see the rest of their fruity flavors that I didn't review!

Citrus Jelly Fruit Slices - The Fudge Factory: Wildwood, NJ (Photo Heavy)

Jelly Fruit Slices Part 2 - The Fudge Factory: Wildwood, NJ
I may have gone a little overboard when I was buying these jelly fruit slices. (I just had to have them all!) Although these citrus flavors aren't as interesting or exotic as the Chili Mango and Pineapple flavors I've already reviewed, they were still lovely to photograph.

Today I'm going to give a quickie review on the Lemon, Pink Grapefruit and Key Lime flavored slices. Let's kick things off with a slice of pink grapefruit!

Limited Edition Milk Chocolate Covered Pop Rocks - The Fudge Factory: Wildwood, NJ

Limited Edition Milk Chocolate Covered Pop Rocks - The Fudge Factory: Wildwood, NJ
Okay, the package says that this is a Limited Edition product, and I had never seen it on the shelves before, but that doesn't mean it's new. About 8 years ago, when I had just started college, THIS was posted over on CandyBlog. I tried looking at the official Pop Rocks Facebook page to see if there was any kind of new promotion for this item, and there wasn't, but it is listed on their official website. (Although it just says Limited Edition and gives no other time stamp info.)

Is this an older item that's been re-released? Or am I about to eat 8 year old candy? I guess we'll find out once I open it...

My boyfriend and I spent our weekend recovering from Otakon and eating blueberry cobbler waffles with blueberry and cinnamon crumble flavored coffee.

What did you eat this weekend?

Food Truck Festival

Photo from Whole Foods Facebook
There is a new Whole Foods location opening in my area. Thankfully this location is a lot closer and convenient to my home, so I can get items to review much easier.

To celebrate their upcoming opening, they will be hosting a Food Truck Festival in their parking lot this Thursday, June 12th, from 5-8 pm. Check out the link above for the store's address and follow their facebook for details.

I'll be stopping by on my way home from work. If you're in the area it might be worth checking out.

Panzarotti - Quickie Review

Today's post will be a really quick review of a Panzarotti from a pizza shop in Merchantville, NJ. (I forgot which one. I'll drive by it again and add the name later this week.) In case you've never heard of this food item, it's similar to a calzone. What you are looking at is a pocket of fried dough filled with cheese and tomato sauce. Essentially, this is a giant pizza pocket.

Lunch at Houlihans

Late Lunch at Houlihan's - Houlihan's: Cherry Hill, NJ
My mother wanted to treat me to a late lunch/early dinner, to celebrate my completion of the teacher prep program, so I let her pick the place.
It's been a while since I've eaten at Houlihan's, so I'm not sure how new this is, but they have an early bird dinner menu. You get a fountain drink, soup (or salad), an entree, and a dessert for under twenty bucks. Not too shabby.
I ordered:
  • Cream of Broccoli Soup (The soup of the day)
  • Chicken Stir-fry
  • Crème Brûlée

Pure Honey - Mill Creek Apiary: Medford Lakes, NJ

Pure Honey - Mill Creek Apiary: Medford Lakes, NJ
To kick off the new year I wanted to photograph something that was really beautiful, and what's prettier than honeycomb?

I absolutely love honey, but that fake, syrupy nonsense that comes in a plastic bear just won't cut it for me. I need the good stuff. I usually buy jars of organic, unprocessed, honey, but my boyfriend totally one-upped me. He picked up this beautiful package of local honey and it includes a HUGE chunk of honeycomb! (I think he might of picked it up at Whole Foods, but I'm not sure.)

This slab of honeycomb is so beautiful that it doesn't need any fancy packaging. The clear plastic container works just fine. Although, I will say that the product sticker is in need of a major makeover. The label looks like the generic mailing address stickers you can order out of catalogs. When compared to some of the more trendy packaged honey products, this could easily be overlooked.
