Sriracha Kettle Chips - Aldi

Sriracha Kettle Chips - Aldi
Lay's Do Us a Flavor is back again with four new finalists, and I gotta say, I'm underwhelmed. Even though they aren't ideal, I plan on reviewing them tomorrow after I get out of work, but I thought this would be a great time to check out this Aldi version of my favorite chip from the first ever round finalists.

Meiji Rich Banana Biscuits - Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ

Meiji Rich Banana Biscuits - Asian Food Market: Cherry Hill, NJ
I freaking love banana, and I've been waiting for Oreo to release a chocolate banana themed cookie for years. The closest we've gotten are the Banana Split Oreo's, and even though those are one of my favorite limited edition Oreo's of all time, they didn't satisfy my craving.

The second I saw this on the shelves I immediately tossed it into my cart. I've tried a LOT of Meiji products in the past, but never their sandwich cookies. Even though this is an entirely new product for me, I'm going into this review with really high expectations. Let's hope that these cookies will finally fulfill my chocolate-banana-less Oreo life.

Reviews coming soon!

Caffé Bene Cookies & Cream Bingsu - H-Mart - Cherry Hill, NJ

Caffé Bene Cookies & Cream Bingsu - H-Mart - Cherry Hill, NJ
Hello everyone, I'm back and I'm finally posting reviews again! I hate that it's been so long, but the last few weeks I've been stretched really thin.

I just wanted to give a quick shout-out/thank you to those of you who visited my table in Otakon's Artist Alley! I was able to meet so many wonderful people, and we talked about everything from video games, to food. It made me really happy, and I hope to see you all again next year. (I'm applying for a table, but it's by lottery, so it's not always guaranteed.)

Enough rambling, let's get right into today's review!

I'm Going to Otakon!

I know my reviews have been pretty spotty this week, but along with this food blog, and my day job, I also make art and all kinds of accessories. Normally I'm able to juggle everything just fine, but I have a table in Otakon's Artist Alley this week and it's eating up all of my sanity free time.

Otakon is a HUGE Anime & Japanese Culture-themed event with over 30,000 attendees, so I've been goingcrazy doing all kinds of things to prepare. I've actually been working on this for months, but since I leave tomorrow morning...it's crunch time, and Sometimes Foodie was put on the back burner.

Since I'm not going to sleep (again) tonight, I'll be queuing up Japanese and Asian themed reviews to tide you over while I'm gone this weekend.

For more information on the convention, visit: https://www.otakon.com/
This year Otakon takes place during the 24th, 25th, & 26th of July. It’s a full weekend filled with panels, special guests, art and all kinds of events!

If you’re going, be sure to stop by and visit me! I’ll have all kinds of art and I’ll be cosplaying!

Candyology101 Episode 19: Lemonade, Cotton Candy & Watermelons, Oh My! (Summer Flavors)

July is flying by fast, so let's take a moment to relax and enjoy some classic summer flavors. On today's episode of Candyology101, Cybele and I discuss three candy flavors commonly associated with summer: lemonade, cotton candy, and watermelon.

We take a moment to talk about what makes a lemonade candy different from a plain lemon candy, give you a little history on the origin of cotton candy/fairy floss, and finish things off with some watermelon themed bubble gum machine memories. Which flavor is your favorite?

Have you been liking Candyology101 so far?

Please head on over to itunes and give us a little review to let us know how we're doing.

Mamma Chia, Chia Squeeze (Strawberry Banana) - Summer Fancy Food Show Samples

Mamma Chia, Chia Squeeze (Strawberry Banana) - Summer Fancy Food Show Samples
Must resist the urge to make an ABBA or Chia Pet reference...

I'm getting ready to head to Baltimore on Thursday, so things are really crazy right now. I'm barely sleeping, I'm making a ton of art, and I'm trying to hurry up and review any and all of the perishable products I picked up in NY before they expire.

When I was leaving the convention center there were a few trucks lined up outside handing out food products. I'm guessing they either couldn't get a booth at the event, or maybe they did have a booth and just wanted extra publicity, but either way, it was more free stuff and this time it was available to the general public as well as show attendees. Since Chia is super popular right now, I thought it'd be fun to give this a try.

Chimes Ginger Chews - Peppermint, Peanut Butter & Orange

Chimes Ginger Chews - Summer Fancy Food Show Samples
I bought that bag of Chimes classic ginger chews well before the Fancy Food Show, because I loved the packaging. So when I saw them at the Fancy Food Show, I had to stop by and tell them how much I loved their designs.

While I was at their table I grabbed a few samples of their other flavors to try, so here's a handy, dandy, little sampler review!

Tsamma Watermelon Juice - Aldi

Tsamma Watermelon Juice - Aldi
Watermelon is pretty much THE summer fruit. We serve it sliced up in fruit salads, we freeze it and eat it as if it were a popsicle, and we even puree it with vodka and a coat hanger for summer drinks.

I love watermelon, so watermelon juice? That should be great, right?

Teaser Photo: What could this be?

I leave for Baltimore Thursday morning, so everything is really crazy right now while I prep for my table in the Artist Alley.

I'm typing up a few more reviews tonight to queue up for the trip, and this photo is from one of them! What is it? And what's hiding behind this handsome Korean actor/spokesman's face?

The Nosh Show - Episode 59: It’s Like Costco, But Better

This week’s episode of The Nosh Show was going to focus on the Summer Fancy Food Show, and they asked me to be a guest! (Since this was my first time going.)

Tune in as I hang out with awesome food bloggers (Marvo from The Impulsive Buy and Ryan from Grub Grade) and we discuss two new Oreo varieties and a KFC pizza chicken.

Plus, Eric of Junk Food Guy, Nick from On Second Scoop, and I talk about our experiences at the 2015 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York.

Chimes Ginger Chews - Marshall's - Marlton, NJ

Chimes Ginger Chews - Marshall's - Marlton, NJ
One of the things Cybele and I mentioned on Candyology101 this year was trying to overcome our dislike of certain flavored sweets. She is trying to overcome her dislike of cherry, and I've been trying to warm up to ginger. So far, it's been going pretty well. I really liked Super Ginger, and I've been drinking more ginger-based beverages and sodas. I used to feel like the strong flavoring was similar to a cleaning product, but now I've come to really appreciate it's unique spiciness.

Since I'm trying more ginger products, and I'm a sucker for a pretty package, I couldn't resist picking these up when I was at Marshall's. (Where I still can't find any jeans that fit me and aren't flares. I swear, I will burn the women's clothing section to the ground.)

Japanese Style Brown Sugar Mochi- Asian Food Market - Cherry Hill, NJ

Japanese Style Brown Sugar Mochi- Asian Food Market - Cherry Hill, NJ
Remember this from my last Asian Food Haul Video? It was one of the last boxes in the store, and usually when something is selling out, it means that it's really good. I didn't want to miss out on it, since products aren't always restocked at the Asian Food Market, so I grabbed a box to review. Now it's finally time to see if my intuition was right, or if I'm just another mindless sheep.

Margarita Kettle Chips - Aldi

Margarita Kettle Chips - Aldi
My food stash is backed up (again). I posted a photo of these on my Instagram roughly two months ago, and I'm finally getting around to reviewing them. Oh well, better late than never!

Ever since the Bottom Dollar buy-out, Aldi has been getting fancier and fancier. We're getting seasonal and limited edition products, fancy flavors, and a ton of gluten free options. Aldi went from being in the same league as Save-a-Lot, to being like a lower-end Trader Joe's, and I'm loving it!

Cricket-Protein and Slim Jim Shakes at Wayback Burger? And it's not even April Fools?

Okay, so a friend of mine posted this on Facebook, I saw it and laughed thinking it was a gag...but it's not?!

Apparently these were announced on June 29th, and they're totally real.
I don't know about you, but I am no where near adventurous enough to eat cricket-based protein powder, even with chocolate to cover it up.

I might try the Slim Jim variety (only if it's cricket-free), but is this just a shock tactic? Are there people out there so protein-crazed that they are demanding bug-based shakes? I get it, protein is really trendy right now, but this? This has to be a ploy to get a ton of publicity. If so, it works! Here I am writing about it right now.

What is the foodie world coming to? Will any of you be trying the Oreo Mud Pie Cricket shake?

Free Slurpee Day is TODAY!

It’s Free Slurpee Day, did you get yours? You still have time!

Sour Patch Watermelon tastes more like watermelon Jolly Ranchers. It’s good, but not quite accurate. Just a little FYI for those of you about to make your first (or third) Slurpee run!

Warheads Sour Worms - Dollar Tree

Warheads Sour Worms - Dollar Tree
Remember these from our Candyology101 Treat or Trick section? It was a while ago, but I finally found them! Warheads were really popular when I was growing up in the 1990's, so I was excited to see what the brand was doing these days with their newer products.

I'm hoping that these are some kind of super sour gummy worm, but they look just like normal gummy worms sold by Trolli and every other candy company out there. Maybe they made these look like normal gummy worms so that you could easily swap the two out for pranks? I guess we'll find out! After all, looks can be deceiving.

Free Slurpees this Saturday for 7/11!

Check out their website to find a location near you.
You know what I like? Free stuff. (Cause I'm cheap!)

This Saturday is 7/11/15, so 7-Eleven, the popular convenience store chain, is celebrating like they do every year and giving out free Slurpees! No purchase or anything required!

One free small Slurpee per customer on Saturday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There is no purchase required, but it's only while supplies last. I went to three locations on the Bring Your Own Cup Day because the first two were tapped out, so be sure to keep that in mind. It's first come first served.

Check out my #tbt bucket-o-Slurpee from BYO-Cup Day this year

Money on Honey Wildflower Honey Caramels - Rastelli Market: Evesham Township, NJ
I'm sorry posting has been so sporadic lately, it'll get back to normal very soon. I only have two weeks left to prepare for my booth for Otakon's artist alley, so I'm sleeping even less than usual, and I look insane, but hopefully all this hard work will payoff. (If you want to read/see more of my art stuff, check out my art blog.)

Since I've been so focused on my print work, Sometimes Foodie has been a bit neglected, but I'm back! (With a fancy gold foil backdrop to boot!) Let's see what all the buzz is about with these Money on Honey caramels. (Oh so lame, but a honey post without any terrible bee references would be a total waste.)

Candyology101 Episode 18: Japanese Sweets

On today's episode of Candyology101, Cybele and I discuss three hugely popular Japanese candies, Pocky, Kasugai gummies, and Hi-Chew! All three of these sweets are becoming easier to find in American grocery stores, so hopefully everyone out there listening can easily find and try these delicious goodies for yourselves.

We have a little bit of history behind each company, Cybele and I share our favorite flavors, and we even play a little game where Cybele lists a (possibly) made-up Japanese sweet and I need to guess if it's real or not! Join us as we discuss the good, the bad, and the tomato-y!

Have you been liking Candyology101 so far?

Teaser & Insta-Foodie

I was busy doing a ton of graphic design work and book binding, so I didn't get to finish up tonight's review, here's a little teaser photo to tide you over until I finish typing it up later tonight after work.

I also added some Instagram foodie photos that haven't made it to the blog under the cut!

Honey Dew Melon Cake Review

This was a regretful purchase...

I’ve been trying to post more content to my YouTube channel, so please head over there and see me awkwardly talk to cameras while my dog begs for food.

Red White & Berry Pop Tarts - Target: Marlton, NJ

Red White & Berry Pop Tarts - Target: Marlton, NJ
It's Independence day here in America, so that means backyard BBQs, fireworks, and a whole lot of red, white, and blue themed foods. Normally I'm not a huge fan of novelty food products like this, where it's a normal every day item with a seasonal color switch up, but I bought these thinking they'd be fun to photograph and post for the holiday. Hopefully the real pastries inside are as cute as their box-art counterparts.

Blood Orange Water Ice - Quickie Review

Blood Orange Water Ice - Quickie Review

So Rita's announced their newest flavor about a week ago, which was blood orange, and it sounded interesting, until I saw that Texas is getting a Dr. Pepper flavored ice. Lucky Texas!

I can't help be feel disappointed by comparison. I like blood orange, because I like all citrus juices and flavors, but I have a feeling that this water ice is more gimmick than anything else. Did Rita's really formulate a whole new flavor syrup for this item? Or did they just add red dye to their preexisting orange flavoring? Let's find out!

Gouda Cheese Bites are Back!

Lifesavers Gummies Tangy Collisions - Walgreens - Cherry Hill, NJ

Lifesavers Gummies Tangy Collisions - Walgreens - Cherry Hill, NJ
Is it gummi? Or gummy? However it's spelled, these sweets are my absolute favorites.

Back in high school, long before I started a food blog, I was candy-loving goth mallrat and I'd buy a huge bag of gummies every Friday at the (now closed) bulk candy store in our local mall. I'd fill a bag with all kind of different gummi shapes and sizes, and I'd eat it all before the next weekend. (Although one or two gummy sharks may or may not have been released back into the wild, meaning the mall fountain. I'm so sorry early 2000's mall cleaning staff. I was a rebel.) I even used to joke that the best birthday present for me would be my weight in gummy candy! (Which I would still love by the way. *hint*hint*)
Now that I've proven my gummi-loving street-cred, let's check out this new flavor variety from Lifesavers that I found at the drugstore. (Where I was buying oh-so-sexy shoe inserts to wear to the convention center.)

Swedish Fish Trident Layers Gum - Gift

Swedish Fish Trident Layers Gum - Gift
Okay, time to get back into the swing of things. I have a ton of posts related to the Summer Fancy Food Show coming up, but my brain (and legs) are basically pudding. It'll take me a day or two to recover and collect my thoughts. In the meantime, let's get back into the normal review routine.

This was one of the candy items I mentioned in the "Desperately Seeking" segment of Candyology101. I really wanted to try this chewing gum, and I had been looking for it everywhere, but I just couldn't find it. Right before I left for NY there was a pretty strong storm here in NJ (some argue it was a tornado) and a lot of people lost power. My bosses went out after the storm to grab some lighters and candles, and when they saw this gum, they bought it for me. (Thank you!)
